[ABSTRAK Kemahiran berbicara adalah salah satu kompetensi yang harus dikuasai mahasiswa semasa belajar di universitas. Pada kenyataannya, beberapa studi menunjukkan bahwa kemahiran berbicara mahasiswa masih dipertanyakan karena kurangnya motivasi dalam belajar yang berakibat pada ketidakpercayaan diri untuk mempraktekkannya sehari-hari. Studi ini akan berfokus pada orientasi mahasiswa UI tingkat akhir yang dapat dikategorikan menjadi instrumental dan integratif dalam korelasinya kepada kemahiran berbicara. Data menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas dari partisipan cenderung memiliki orientasi instrumental daripada integratif. Data juga menunjukkan bahwa adanya korelasi positif antara orientasi mahasiswa dengan kemahiran berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris. ABSTRACT Students? speaking proficiency is one of the competencies that should be acquired throughout their study in university. Regrettably, studies show that students? speaking skill is still questionable due to their lack of motivation that makes them hesitate to practice more. This study will focus on UI sophomore students? orientation which can be distinguished to instrumental and integrative in correlation to their speaking proficiency. It is found that the majority of the participants tend to have instrumental rather than integrative orientation and high motivational level in learning. Positive correlation is also found between students? orientation and their speaking proficiency., Students’ speaking proficiency is one of the competencies that should be acquired throughout their study in university. Regrettably, studies show that students’ speaking skill is still questionable due to their lack of motivation that makes them hesitate to practice more.
