Menjadi precariat bukan selalu menjadi pilihan yang merugikan pekerjanya. Jika seorang pekerja yang telah memilih untuk bekerja dengan sistem precarious dapat menekuni profesinya dengan strategi yang baik, ia dapat mendapat kepuasan kerja dan materi yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan pekerja salariat. Musisi adalah salah satu di antaranya. Musisi dalam penelitian ini ditujukan kepada musisi yang bermain di cafe. Mereka bekerja di sejumlah cafe dan sering kali berpindah tempat kerja dalam waktu yang relatif singkat. Mereka memilih untuk menjadi musisi, bukan dengan perasaan terpaksa. Mereka memahami bagaimana musisi harus bekerja, menikmati sistem precarious (rentan), dan bersedia menerima konsekuensi dari sistem kerja tersebut. Hal ini berkontradiksi dari argumentasi Standing (2011) yang menyatakan sistem kerja precarious sebagai suatu masalah bagi pekerja dalam masyarakat industri karena tidak jelasnya status pekerja, stabilitas upah dan waktu bekerja. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mempelajari sistem kerja precarious dari pemahaman suatu band sebagai informan kunci. Band yang diteliti, The Romantics (pseudonym), adalah salah satu band senior yang sukses tampil di sejumlah cafe dan venue ternama di wilayah Jabodetabek. Mereka memainkan genre pop ballad. Penelitian ini mencoba untuk memahami apa yang diperhitungkan oleh informan musisi dalam bekerja, motivasi mereka untuk berkarir sebagai musisi serta kontradiksi dari bekerja sebagai precariat. Mereka membuktikan dengan menjadi precariat mereka sebaliknya diuntungkan dari segi pendapatan serta jam kerja, dan yang terpenting mereka dapat merasakan kepuasan saat mereka bekerja. Terdapat nilai-nilai dalam hidup dan bekerja yang mereka yakini dan mendorong mereka untuk tetap berprofesi sebagai musisi, meskipun keputusan mereka mengharuskan mereka untuk senantiasa menjadi aktif dan siap menghadapi rintangan dalam profesi dan hidupnya. Nilai-nilai ini juga membuat mereka berpikir secara praktikal dalam melihat dan menjalani profesi mereka.
Becoming a precariat is not necessarily an unfortunate decision that disadvantages the workers. If someone who has chosen to work within the precarious system manages to work using the strategies that fit to the working condition, he or she will achieve a higher level of satisfaction in the work place and a higher amount of income comparing to the salariats. Taking one case study, this system renders vantages to musicians. Musicians in this study refers to the musicians who perform in cafes. Their profession requires them to play in several cafes and often time to move from a cafe to another due to the relatively short contracts. They were the ones who decide themselves to be musicians, not making the decision by being forced to. They understood how musicians have to work, took delight in working within the precarious system, and were willing to take the consequences caused by the system. This contradicts Standing's argument (2011) that states how the precarious employment system becomes problematic to the workers in industrial society due to the ambiguity of their employment status, the instability of income and the unclear distinction between the working time and the leisure time. The study was conducted by learning the precarious employment system from the perspective of a band whose members became the key informants of this study. The band, called The Romantics (pseudonym), is one of the well-known senior bands that performs in notable cafes and venues located in Jabodetabek district. They play pop ballad. This study attempts to understand the concerns of the informants in working, their motivation to work as musicians and the contradictions in working as precariat. They proved that by becoming precariat they were able to gain advantages for their income, their leisure time and more importantly, their feeling of contentment in doing their work. There are values that they keep which motivate them to pursue their career as musicians, even though the their decision demands them to constantly be active and be prepared in facing obstacles in their career and their lives. These values, in turn, affect them to think and to act practically in seeing and doing their profession. |
