Forgiveness model in collective culture: a qualitative study in Javanese society (2014 Asian Congress of applied psychology (ACAP 2014) conference proceedings May 7-8, 2014 Singapore)

Current qualitative study was aimed to generate a forgiveness theoretical model ofcollective culture. A grounded theory approach was applied by conducting in-depthinterviews on 8 Javanese adolescents. Data was analyzed through open coding, axial coding,and selective coding. Results showed that relationship disruption and negative emotionsserved as phenomenon emerging form the transgression. Forgiveness statement anddecisional forgiveness were given as strategies to restore relationship, and emotionalforgiveness to ease the negative emotions and reach intrapersonal peace. Harmonious value,cooperation, and apologizing were among the intervening conditions fostering decisionalforgiveness, and the presence of efforts to retrains negative emotion, maintain positivecommunication, lessening rumination were the intervening conditions accelerating emotionalforgiveness. Implications for following studies and interventions are presented. |
