The jargon "cultural economy" in the wake of late capitalism and globalization is essentially not so much different from the jargon "modernization" in the colonial era. In favor of "peaceful control over the colony in the name of humanity", the Dutch colonizer (of Indonesia/Indies) in the past seek to modernize the colonized indies nation in order to develop a mild political and social condition in the colony necessary to prolong control and extraction over raw materials and other resources. "Modernization" by way of cultural assimilation of indigenous architecture and/or formal symbols into rationalized built environment left its artifacts in many cities of indonesia, many of which are now considered as urban cultural heritage. |
