 Abstrak

ABSTRAK
Skripsi ini membahas mengenai sejarah tokoh wanita dalam bidang imigrasi dan
kolonisasi di Australia bernama Caroline Chisholm. Skripsi ini mendiskusikan strategi
Caroline dalam membantu imigran untuk memperoleh pekerjaan dan kehidupan di tanah
Australia. Di tahun 1841, Caroline Chisholm memperhatikan kondisi para imigran yang
hidup miskin dan terlantar di jalanan, terutama imigran wanita. Tanpa mengharapkan
imbalan atau penghargaan, Caroline Chisholm bergerak membantu para imigran mulai
dari membangun Female Immigrant Home hingga menyebarkan para imigran ke daerah
pedalaman Australia. Selain itu, ia dan suaminya juga membantu para calon imigran di
Inggris untuk bermigrasi ke Australia melalui Family Colonization Loan Society.
Kegiatan Caroline Chisholm mendapat pengharagaan tinggi oleh masyarakat dan
pemerintah baik di Australia maupun di Inggris. Strategi yang diterapkan oleh Caroline
Chisholm berdampak pada peningkatan martabat wanita dan perubahan sistem imigrasi
dan pelayaran di Inggris dan Australia pada abad ke 19. Penelitian ini didasarkan dari
sumber arsip yang dimiliki oleh National Archives of Australia yang dibukukan dalam
Historical Record of Australia juga surat kabar dan buku terkait Caroline Chisholm.
Skripsi ini diteliti menggunakan metode sejarah.

ABSTRACT
This study is focusing on Caroline Chisholm, a woman figure at immigration
and colonization field in Australia. It discussed the strategies Caroline use for helping
the immigrant find a job and have a living in Australia. In 1841, Caroline Chisholm
observing immigrant condition because many of them destitute and lives on the street,
especially female immigrant. Without concern of rewards, Caroline Chisholm founded
Female Immigrant Home for helping female immigrant then brought them with other
immigrants to the Australian bush, finding jobs and living places for them. Caroline and
her husband also helped people who wished to emigrate from England to Australia
through Family Colonization Loan Society. Caroline Chisholm activities are deeply
appreciated by people and government in Australia as well as England. Caroline
strategies had influence into women welfare and changed immigration and sailing
system in England and Australia at 19th century. This research based on archival source
held in the National Archives of Australia that recorded in Historical Record of
Australia as well as newspaper and book on Caroline Chisholm. This study based on
historical methods.
