ABSTRAK Tesis ini membahas perkembangan kepribadian tokoh utama film Love and OtherDrugs, sebuah film komedi yang merupakan adaptasi dari sebuah buku non-fiksi,Hard Sell, The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. Penelitian ini mencoba untukmengungkapkan proses perkembangan kepribadian tokoh utama denganmenggunakan beberapa teori semiotik dan psikoanalisis. Alur film memperlihatkanbenturan antara tokoh utama dengan tokoh-tokoh lain yang menyebabkan dia menjadilebih matang dan bertanggung jawab. Tokoh dan penokohan dalam filmmenampilkan permasalahan yang merupakan kunci proses perkembangan kepribadiantokoh utama. Alur dan penokohan mendukung perkembangan kepribadian tokohutama. Dari hasil analisis keseluruhan ditemukan bahwa perkembangan kepribadianseseorang tidak lepas dari lingkungan di sekitarnya, terutama orang-orangterdekatnya. Film Love and Other Drugs memberikan tawaran baru bagi karya filmbergenre komedi yang menyajikan sebuah tema serius. ABSTRACT This thesis analyzes the personality development in the main character of Love andOther Drugs, a comedy film based on the non-fiction book, Hard Sell, The Evolutionof a Viagra Salesman. This research attempts to reveal the process of personalitydevelopment of the main character using semiotic and psychoanalysis theories. Theplot of the film shows that there are conflicts among the main character towards theother characters which cause him to be mature and reliable. The characters and thecharacterization show that their problems are the keys of the process of the maincharacter?s personality development. The plot and the characterization support hispersonality development. The analysis shows that someone?s personalitydevelopment relates to his environment, especially, his family and close friends.
