Abstract
ABSTRACT
Frontier films like The Martian (2015), often presents the idea of the frontier as the American dream of reaching and conquering new lands in seek of unfulfilled hopes and threats. It creates a notion that exploring and colonizing the frontier are essential for the American national identity, and often move around the utopian ideal through the reconstruction of the history of the American frontier. This paper addresses the representation of the idea of Mars colonization as a representation of the new American dream by analyzing the movie The Martian (2015). This article focuses on how the film depicts Mars as a conquerable and habitable land with unfulfilled hopes and threats which makes it an ideal space to be colonized.
