| “Scripture, Mishnah, and the Confessions” examines the rabbinic sayingsof the Pharisees at the time of Christ, the “oral law of Moses” that ultimatelywas written down in a.d. 200. These Mishnaic interpretationsthought to apply the Old Testament to their new culture. The authornotes that church leaders, wittingly or unwittingly, elevate their formaldocuments to the same level of authority in seeking to adjust to changingcultures. This tendency is observed in the history of the church, whetherRomanism or liberalism, fundamentalism or evangelicalism, and sometimesin confessional church circles. |
