ABSTRAK Indonesia ranks 4th in the largest populated country on earth, with having almost 255 million poeple. With that number also. Indonesia possesses one of the most diverse society in the world, with having numerous culture, communities, and tradition. That diversity is a part of Indonesia's heritage and pride. Indonesia strives to be a diverse, open, and tolerant society, as envisioned in the national slogan, Bhinneka TUnggal Ika, meaning Unity in Diversity. But the diversity in Indonesia is not always smooth as it might look like. This paper will discuss about the disparity among Indonesians. Particularly the Chinese Indonesian descendants who are legally Indonesians, yet face discrimination and victimization, as a part of the minority. This paper will also elaborate how Indonesia should pursue the tolerant society to pursue unity in diversity, in regards to fully accept Chinese Indonesian descendants as a part of Indonesia, healing the old collective wounds and tensions that still linger, and becoming a wholly great and open nation. |
