Abstract
ABSTRAK
Novel dengan tema keberagaman banyak bermunculan. Penelitian mengenai karya sastra tersebut banyak pula dilakukan. Dengan menggunakan novel The Hate U Give 2017 sebagai data, tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa bagaimana metode pertahanan digunakan oleh karakter Starr Carter dalam menyembunyikan identitasnya sebagai keturunan Afrika Amerika dan bagaimana proses terbentuknya solidaritas terhadap sesama kaum kulit hitam. Metode pertahanan Freud dan model pembentukan solidaritas Shelby adalah kerangka penelitian tulisan ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan metode pertahanan tidak efektif dan faktor eksternal berpengaruh penting terhadap pembentukan solidaritas seseorang.
ABSTRACT
As diverse writing continues to be sought for, researchers have been conducting studies on own voices literature. By using The Hate U Give 2017 as the data and focusing on the character Starr Carter, this study aims to analyze how defense mechanism is used to suppress her black identity and how the foundation of her black solidarity is formed. Freudian Defense Mechanism and Tommy Shelby rsquo;s Model of Black Solidarity Formation serve as the framework of this study. The findings suggest the application of defense mechanism to be ineffective and the influence of external forces in the formation of black solidarity to be significant.
