ABSTRACT In the Australian political system, there are two major parties that dominate the government, namely the Australia Labor Party (ALP) and the Liberal-National Coalition Party. However, between the two major parties, there was a presence of minor parties such as Australian Greens. The existence of minor parties in Australia can not be separated from tidal conditions. Among other minor parties, Australian Greens successfully became a surviving minor party in Australian Political System. This research discusses about how Australian Greens as a minor party in Australia survives among the domination of two other major parties from 2010 to 2016. This research uses the theory of Small Party Survival by Jae-Jae Spoon with qualitative methods. According on the findings, it is not only supported by the application of the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system that is proportional to the election of Senate members but Australian Greens can survive because it is driven by internal factors which include policy strategies, election strategies and communication strategies carried out by Australian Greens as a form of balancing behavior which is in accordance with the theory of Small Party Survival. |
