ABSTRACT Bi 2 Se 3 , one of the topological insulators (TIs) has spawned a lot of interest to further investigate properties of this material, not only because of its natural importance, but also its applications for future devices. Over the past few years ap- plied research on TIs has been targeted to develop photodetectors of near-infrared wavelengths for telecommunication, medical imaging, and gas sensing. TI is different from simple metal or insulator in the sense that the inside part is insulating while its surface is metallic due to the presence of gapless surface states, meaning that electrons can only move along the surface of the material. In this work, Density functional theory (DFT) is used to calculate the ground state properties of Bi 2 Se 3 .While its excited state properties are corrected within GW approximation and the calculation on optical spectra are implemented by Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) using many body perturbation theory (MBPT) to complete the study of the effect of electron-electron and electron-hole interactions. |
