ABSTRACT The expression of inference and possibility of predicate markers -mAk vā and -(y)IK shows a close affinity in terms of epistemic modality. Modal predicate which is marked by -(y)IK points an inference from observable evidence and speaker makes a firm judgment based on that evidence. It indicates that the speaker is certain about his/her judgment which may be identified as deductive. On the other hand, the predicate marked by -mAk vā indicates uncertainity and expresses both epistemically possible and one's possible prediction. At this point, this paper aims to describe the semantic features and functional differences of the predicate markers of -mAk vā and -(y)IK in the dialect of Ayvacik district in Canakkale Province. Furthermore, the conditions that cause the semantic differences and similarities to occur between these two markers are examined. |
