The present works aim at the utilizations of waste as a sustainable material, one ofthem is alum sludge from drinking water treatment plant for adsorption of variouspollutants. Activation methods used to improve the adsorption efficiencyRhodamine-B and paracetamol using alum sludge adsorbent in this study iscalcination at 400oC and 600oC (CAL400 and CAL600), gelation (GEL), synthesisof TiO2-alum sludge composites (TiO2 @ AS), and synthesis of ZnCl2-alum sludgecomposites (ZnCl2 @ AS). The adsorbents were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRF,BET, and pHPZC. The optimum condition of the removal was investigated usingbatch method, the result given were: maximum dye removal was obtained usingZnCl2@AS adsorbent, optimum contact time of 120 minutes, adsorbentconcentration of 3 g/L, initial dye concentration of 50 mg/L. Quantification of dyewas carried out by using UV-visible spectrophotometer at λmax=554 nm and an asprepared standard calibration curve. The pseudo-second order kinetic model had the highest correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.9996). The Freundlich isotherm equationcan best describe the experimental data (R2= 0.9485). The activation methods usedin this study were ineffective for removing Paracetamol, with <10% removal innatural pH. |
