Tesis ini mempelajari bagaimana sinema merepresentasikan ruang-ruang sejarah beserta keseharian, isu gender, kelas sosial, kolonialisme, dan nilai-nilai tradisi melalui pengamatan terhadap tiga sinema historis bertema kehidupan R.A. Kartini keluaran tahun 1980-an dan 2010-an. Tesis ini menganalisis representasi konsep-konsep di atas dari cara aktor berinteraksi satu sama lain dan beraktivitas dalam batasan-batasan ruang domestik dan hubungannya dengan ruang publik. Analisis pada tesis ini merekonstruksi fragmen-fragmen representasi lingkungan dalem Kabupaten Jepara – tempat tinggal R.A. Kartini sejak masa kecil hingga menikah – sebagai latar yang dominan pada ketiga sinema tersebut. Rekonstruksi ini kemudian menunjukkan jika otentisitas latar tersebut berhubungan dengan narasi masing-masing sinema – yang juga dipengaruhi oleh narasi politik dan sejarah yang populer ketika sinema diproduksi. Mengingat bentuknya sebagai salah satu produk kreatif dari historiografi, sering terdapat perdebatan antara sisi kreatif dari sinema dan tanggung jawabnya untuk menjaga akurasi fakta sejarah. Tesis ini menemukan bahwa otentisitas ruang dalam sinema sejarah adalah sebuah spektrum dan dapat berkompromi dengan pertimbangan kreatif untuk mencapai narasi yang diinginkan. Berdasarkan observasi terhadap tiga sinema dengan tema yang sama, tesis ini menemukan bahwa seorang tokoh bersejarah dapat direpresentasikan melalui kombinasi ruang yang berbeda, hubungan yang berbeda dengan tokoh-tokoh di sekitarnya, serta teknik visual yang berbeda, dengan beragam cara memanipulasi fakta sejarah.
This thesis explores the recreation of spaces in history, along with representations of everyday life, gender and class issues, colonialism, and traditional values in spaces within 1980s and 2010s Indonesian movies that depict the life of R.A. Kartini. The analysis of such concepts surrounds the way characters interact with each other, inhabit, and exist within the boundaries of domestic spaces, which can relate to their existence in public settings. In this thesis, the author reconstructed fragments of the dalem (palace) of Jepara Regency – where Kartini lived from childhood until the beginning of her marriage – as the most significant set of all three movies. This reconstruction then shows the relations between the authenticity of these recreated spaces with each movie’s narratives – which were also a product of political and historical narratives that were popular during the movies’ production. Given its essence as a creative form of historiography, historical cinema is often torn between staying true to historical facts and allowing its creators some levels of creative liberty. This thesis found that authenticity in historical cinema is a spectrum, and it often compromises with creative liberty in order to achieve its creators’ intended narrative. Based on observing three movies of the same theme, this thesis found that the exact historical figure can be represented within different combinations of spaces, relationships with their surrounding figures, and different visual techniques, all while manipulating authentic historical facts in different manners. |
