Kelahiran kaum Kid di Amerika bersamaan dengan proses perubahan dan industrialisasi yang terjadi pada abad 19, yang dalam perkembangannya juga menyebabkan kemelaratan dan eksploitasi berlebihan terhadap manusia. Pada tahun 1930an bertepatan dengan peristiwa great depression yang melanda masyarakat Amerika, situasi yang terjadi juga memunculkan momentum bagi kemunculan kaum Kiri atau yang dikenal dengan kaum the Old Left. Pergerakan kaum the Old Left terinspirasi dan dimotivasi Revolusi Bolshevik yang terjadi di Uni Soviet bulan Oktober 1917. Kaum tersebut berupaya menduplikasi Revolusi Bolshevik, akibatnya muncul histeria anti komunis pada sebagian warga masyarakat Amerika, dan situasi histeria itu juga dimanfaatkan untuk popularitas pribadi oleh Senator Joseph McCarthy (Republican, 1946-1957) dari Wisconsin.Sikap pemerintah, menguatnya kaum Kanan, ketidakadilan sosial-ekonomi, isu anti perang Vietnam data civil rights movement mendorong pemunculan gerakan the New Left yang didominasi kaum muda berpendidikan tinggi dan masyarakat kelas menengah Amerika. Pergerakan yang dimaksud merupakan bentuk protes dan perjuangan dalam upaya menegakkan prinsip-prinsip demokrasi, serta ketidakadilan sosial yang dirasakan sebagian warga masyarakat. Suatu perjuangan yang didalamnya menyangkut aspek strategi, aksi yang dilakukan, hambatan dan lawan" politik yang dihadapi. Pergerakan untuk memperjuangkan ideologi "participatory democracy", yang kemudian dikalangan aktivis the New Left menimbulkan benturan antara pengikut Mantis dengan yang konsisten pada ide "participatory democracy ".Persoalan tersebut menjadi inti permasalahan dalam tesis ini, karena tujuan penelitian secara garis besar ingin menunjukkan pergerakan dan eksistensi kaum the New Left di tahun 1960an. Agar terbuka pandangan luas terhadap kaum Kid, serta kritis dalam melihat sejarah maupun realitas yang berkembang di masyarakat Amerika.Tesis ini menggunakan penelitian dan sumber kepustakaan dan dalam melakukan pengkajian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk menganalisis prinsip-prinsip umum yang mendasari terjadinya satuan gejala atau pola-pola yang ada dalam kehidupan masyarakat. Gejala dan pola-pola yang satu sama lain saling berkaitan dalam hubungan fungsional yang menyeluruh. Penelitian juga melibatkan bidang kajian ilmu sosial, politik, ekonomi dan sejarah, serta kerangka teori menggunakan teori ideologi dan kepemimpinan karena kedua faktor itu merupakan hal yang mendasar dalam suatu perjuangan politik.Apa yang dilakukan the New left sedikitnya turut berupaya melakukan percepatan praktek demokratisasi, dan mengingatkan kepada masyarakat akan persoalan kemiskinan yang tak pernah terselesaikan. Kaum the New left juga memperkuat desakan terhadap negara untuk menghapus diskriminasi ras, warna kulit, agama, asal suku bangsa yang kemudian berkembang dengan adanya pengakuan multikulturalisme bagi masyarakat dan bangsa Amerika.The New Left in the 60sThe Left wing in America was born in the 19th century; within the time of changing process and industrialization that resulted in poverty and human exploitation through the development. In the I930's, while the American great depression was commencing, rose these Left wing American whom was also known as the Old Left Their movement was inspired and motivated by the Bolshevik Revolution of the Soviet Union (October 1917). The Old Left tried to duplicate the Bolshevik Revolution into the American society.The result was the roar of anti communism within some of the American citizens. This situation was then used to boost the popularity gain of a Senator from Wisconsin, named Joseph McCarthy (Republican 1946-1957).The government's actions, strengthening of the Right wing, unjust in the social and economy, the Vietnam War issue and the civil rights movement pushed for the rising of the New Left. Its followers was mainly dominated by the young and well educated and middles class society. This movement was a form of protest and a battle effort to upright the principles of democracy, and the social unfairness which was felt by many of the American citizens at that time. This battle involved strategic aspects, actions, and political bathers and opponents. The movement also fought for the ideology participatory democracy, which later on caused some impacts within the New Left activists, which was between the Marxist followers and the followers who were constant to the "participatory democracy". The above issue will be the focused problem for this thesis since the purpose of the research is mainly to point out the movement and existence of the New Left in the 1960's. Hence opening up and broadening the view of the Left wing, while also being critical of seeing the history and reality developed in the American society. This thesis is based on research from literature studies and a qualitative approach for analyzing the basic principles that serves as the basis for indications or patterns that exists within the life of the society. Indications and patterns are functionally interrelated to one another as a whole. The research also incorporates the social, political, economy and history studies, and the theory of ideology and leadership, since the two factors are the basis of a political movement.What the New Left has at least done was increasing the speed of practicing democracy and reminded the society of the poverty issues that has never been solved. The New Left has also strengthened the pressure to the government to erase discrimination of race, skin color and religion, which then further developed into the multiculturalism acknowledgement for the American society and their nation. |
