Indonesian phenomenon in the Australian literary works is considered to be important and interesting to discuss. Blanche d'Alpuget's Monkeys in the Dark as one of the Australia-Asia novels raises how Australian encountering Indonesia in the 1960s. This research is focused on how characters, settings, point of view and tone of narration of the novel work and form the representation of Indonesia. It showed that Indonesia is represented as a nation with its stereotype people, strange place and other degrading nature. The view of Indonesia is negative and a "significant other". This representation has something to do with Australian colonial discourse and with what Edward said terms, in the context of the East-West relationship, colonial discourse, image making and system of representations. |
