| Language Loyalty Among Arab Descendants: A Case Study in Kecamatan Pasar Kliwon Rota Nadia SurakartaThis study discusses the language loyalty among Arab descendants on the Arabic language. It aimed to describe the level of language loyalty among them on the language. Besides, this study also describes their linguistic use and linguistic choice in general in relation to their competence on three languages. Those are Arabic, Indonesian, and Javanese. In order to handle such problems, this study refers to Fishman's theory (1986) about language loyalty and other related theories, such as bilingualism, language choice, and language attitude theories. Three techniques have been used to collect the data. Those are interview, observation, and questionnaires. In the data collection, 120 people were involved. They were broken down into three groups. The first group consisted of forty people who were fifty-one or more years of age. The second group consisted of forty people who were twenty-six to fifty years of age. The third group consisted of forty people who were less than twenty-six years of age. This study concludes that practically Arab descendants show low loyalty to the Arabic language. For religious purposes, however, they show a high loyalty on the language. |
