The aim of this study is to analyze the implications of changing women's economic activities from agricultural sector to agro-industrial sector. Gundih vilage in Central Java was selected as filed research area. The result points out that the transformation of women status from agricultural workers tom agro-industrial workers simulated the reorganization of the entire life of women, family and society. Involved women in agro-industrial sector has changed the power relationship between husband and wife. A further finding pointed out by this research is, although the women have their own income, even in many cases it is more than the amount earned by the husband, they continue to percetive themselves as subordinate to husbands which is in line with the tradisional obligations. Conflicting roles at the work place and household encountered by women has forced them to work in longer period of time without any rewards. There is also phenomenon of work segregation in agro-industrial works. Women are still positioned in marginal division. Supervisor and head of division are still occupied by men. Traditional values are still dominant in the work place and society, since they are contructured and reproduced through various conditions and mechanism. |
