Abstract We can see a weekly newsmagazine at least from two perspectives. One isfrom communication perspective, and the other is from economic perspective. Fromthe communication point of view, a weekly newsmagazine is one of thecommunication channels that we use in mass communication level. As from theeconomic standpoint, a weekly newsmagazine can be viewed as a business institution. This thesis is about the weekly newsmagazine as a business institution in the contextof media economics.Media economics is the study of how media industriesuse scarce rcsouroes toproduce content that is distributed among consumers in a society to satisfy vaiiouswants and needs.Media industries are unique in that they function in dual product market. Thatis, although media companies produce one product, they participate in two separategood and service markets. In the iirst market, the good we discuss here is in the foml of a weeklynewsmagazine. The good is marketed to consumers. The second market in whichmany media companies are engaged involves the selling of advertising. Advertisers seek access to the audiences using media content. This two areas strongly influenceeach other. In the period of 1999-2000 there are at least five weekly newsmagazinesThey compete with each other in their push for increased market and advertisingshares, while the continuing economic and political crisis has caused the decline ofthe mentioned markets. The competition between this tive media companies has been keen, since themarkets are getting smaller. Not only they have to create a product that meetsconsumers? need, they also have to End out how to market the product. So, it is veryimportant to know what is the proper marketing strategy in such condition. The study tries to find out how the structure of the weeldy newsmagazineindustry is; how Tempo, Gatra, and Gamma react and why they react that way; andwhat should the marketing division do to achieve bigger market and advertisingshares. The study shows that since all the media companies in this industry target thesame market, each has to produce a unique product, a product-that has such quality orfeatures that diiterentiates it trom the other. Tempo, as the leader in this indusuy forthe given period, has bigger opportunity to innovate in order to make progress. Gatraand Gamma, as followers, have to make every effort to survive. This effort includesgiving up big discounts for the advertising rates, which in tum will bring a loss to thisindustry. The prospect of the weekly newsmagazine industry is questionable since theprofitability of this industry is not good enough for as many as tive companies. |
