Proses regulasi diri diduga merupakan mekanisme yang mendasari Penggunaan Smartphone Bermasalah/PSB terutama di kalangan usia emerging adults. Penelitian-penelitian sebelumnya telah menemukan bahwa komponen perilaku dari sistem regulasi diri, yaitu kontrol diri, dapat menjadi prediktor negatif yang signifikan untuk PSB. Namun, terdapat penelitian-penelitian lainnya yang tidak menemukan hubungan yang signifikan antara kontrol diri dan PSB. Penelitian ini menduga bahwa pemahaman mengenai proses regulasi diri dalam PSB perlu memperhitungkan interaksi komponen perilaku dan komponen kognitif dari sistem regulasi diri. Partisipan, yang terdiri dari emerging adults yang aktif menggunakan smartphone (N=130), mengisi pengukuran kontrol diri (Brief Self Control Scale), penggunaan smartphone bermasalah/PSB (Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version), serta mengerjakan tugas kognitif Stroop sebagai pengukuran kontrol inhibisi. Hasil analisis moderasi PROCESS Model 1 menunjukkan bahwa kontrol inhibisi memoderasi hubungan antara kontrol diri dan PSB secara signifikan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa peran kontrol diri dalam mengurangi kecenderungan perilaku PSB dapat diperkuat dengan peningkatan performa kontrol inhibisi. Diskusi terkait hasil penelitian ini akan menekankan interaksi kontrol diri dan kontrol inhibisi sebagai sistem regulasi diri dalam mendukung perilaku penggunaan smartphone yang lebih sehat. The process of self-regulation has been proposed to be the underlying mechanism of Problematic Smartphone Use (PSU), particularly among emerging adults. Previous studies have demonstrated that self-control, a crucial behavioral component of the self-regulatory system, can significantly predict PSU. However, conflicting findings have been reported, with some studies failing to establish a significant relationship between self-control and PSU. This study proposes that a comprehensive understanding of the self-regulatory process in PSU should consider the interplay between the behavioral and the cognitive component of the self-regulatory system. A sample of 130 Indonesian emerging adults, who actively use smartphones, completed measures of self-control (Brief Self-Control Scale), problematic smartphone use (Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version), and performed the Stroop task as an inhibitory control measure. The results of the moderation analysis using PROCESS Model 1 revealed that inhibitory control significantly moderated the relationship between self-control and PSB. The result suggests that enhancing inhibitory control performance can strengthen the role of self-control in reducing individuals’ tendency towards PSU. The discussion of the current study's findings will underscore the interaction between self-control and inhibitory control as a self-regulatory system that supports healthier smartphone usage behaviors. |
