 Abstract
......Suicidal ideation emerged as the first behavior before the act of suicide itself. Therefore, increasing protective factors could have been an effective way to reduce such behavior. One of the efforts was by enhancing self-compassion. This study aimed to identify the role of self-compassion in suicidal ideation among out-of-town college students. The total number of participants was 186 students in early adulthood aged 18-25 years, who lived alone in dormitories, boarding houses, or apartments during their studies. The participants were assessed using Self-Compassion Short Form (SCS-SF) and the Depressive Symptom Index-Suicidality Subscale (DSI-SS). The data obtained were analyzed using simple linear regression techniques, with the results showing that self-compassion significantly negatively correlated with the level of suicidal ideation among out-of-town college students (R2 = 0.236, p < 0.05). In conclusion, the study found that increases in self-compassion led to reductions in the level of suicidal ideation. The findings of this study were expected to be a basis for developing preventive intervention steps against the risk factors of suicidal ideation among out-of-town students.
