ABSTRACTAs the demand for better vehicles increases, the driver’s safety must also be
improved. The problem with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) is the nonlinearity of
the model often causes difficulties in controlling the state variables. Linearization of
the model is usually performed with several assumptions and simplification which
leads to large errors that affect the performance of the controlled system.
In this research, a yaw rate and vehicle’s velocity control of an electric vehicle
is proposed using a predictive control. This type of nonlinear predictive controller is
chosen due to its capability of optimizing the control as a quadratic programming
problem. In the development of the prediction model, the driver’s steer angle is
considered as disturbance. The nonlinear vehicle dynamics is identified by a
Multistage Least Square identification method and validated using performance
indicators loss function and Final Prediction Error (FPE). The setpoint for the yaw
rate is generated by a reference model as a static function of vehicle velocity and
driver’s steer angle, while the reference value for the velocity is given constant. The
controller then gives compensation to the driver’s steer angle and longitudinal forces
to the wheels. The control perforrmance is verified by simulation to show the ability
to track the setpoint changes.
