Weiss, Joseph W.
"Ethics for Today. This is a pragmatic, hands-on, up-to-date guide to determining right and wrong in the business world. Joseph Weiss integrates a stakeholder perspective with an issues-oriented approach so students look at how a business's actions affect not just share price and profit but the well-being of employees, customers, suppliers, the local community, the larger society, other nations, and the environment. Weiss uses a wealth of contemporary examples, including twenty-three customized cases that immerse students directly in recent business ethics dilemmas and ask them to consider how they would resolve them. The recent economic collapse raised ethical issues that have yet to be resolved--there could not be a better time for a fully updated edition of Weiss's classic, accessible blend of theory and practice. New to the Sixth Edition!New Cases! Fourteen of the twenty-three cases in this book are brand new to this edition. They touch on issues such as cyberbullying, fracking, neuromarketing, and for-profit education and involve institutions like Goldman Sachs, Google, Kaiser Permanente, Walmart, Ford, and Facebook. Updated Throughout! The text has been updated with the latest research, including new national ethics survey data, perspectives on generational differences, and global and international issues. Each chapter includes recent business press stories touching on ethical issues. New Feature! Several chapters now feature a unique Point/Counterpoint exercise that challenges students to argue both sides of a contemporary issue, such as too-big-to-fail institutions, the Boston bomber Rolling Stone cover, student loan debt, online file sharing, and questions raised by social media. ;

"In the past few decades, the concept of social responsibility has emerged as an increasingly important feature of the business landscape. No longer can businesses base their decisions solely on economic criteria (profit), now they must also consider the legal, ethical, philanthropic and social impacts of each business decision.
The role of business is rapidly changing. In today's emerging global society, businesses have embraced corporate social responsibility (CSR) not only as a value reflective of their new role in contributing to societal goals, but also as a strategy for improving the bottom line.
Corporate Social Responsibility is business' responsibility, strategy, and contribution to sustainable development. It called business responsibility because of the basic principal that we are not the owner of nowadays, but we owned to the future. It called business strategy because through CSR, the company can use it as a strategy to prevent from threats.
Corporate Social Responsibility plays a key role in enhancing the business image of the company. The CSR is part of the company's strategy. CSR gives values to three stakeholders: company, community and local government.
The company needs the secure feeling condition in order to make it free from any threats caused by external that can affect to the going concern operation of the company. The company losses measurement because of environment threats result is the cost that has to be paid by the company. For example the cost of discontinue project that was blocked by the community for reasons like oil spill in the river or sea, etc. Therefore, CSR is a "must".
Thirty years ago, the Club of Rome stated that there were only 30 years' worth of oil reserves and that we should impose zero growth. Thirty years later, with sustained economic growth, there are still more than 40 years' worth of reserves in front of us. We should not conclude from this that the diagnosis was completely false. However, the researcher believes that if we try to do our best for this planet, we still can renew the wealth that is kept in the tummy of the earth. In conclusion, doing well for our lands benefits the entire stakeholder and the earth itself.
The researcher is trying to emphasize the CSR doing by oil and Gas Company in Indonesia named Total E&P Indonesia. Oil and gas industry is the industry that dealing with its activities within area of exploration and production of hydrocarbon resources to produce oil and gas. Its working area is often overlapped with the center activities of communities which will affect the stability of the environment.
Nowadays, the threats to the company like oil & gas have showed the scale that can harm the investment in mineral resources, and become the bilateral issue between the investor countries and our country Indonesia. The direct looses normally resulted by the interrupted of operation due to a blockage by the communities to Total E&P Indonesia have reached the cost between USS 70,000 - USS 75,000 per days.
To overcome those problems, the company develops an approaching method intensive program called Sustainable Development Program. If the company gets in trouble, it is not sustainable. Sustainable development is an essential parameter that impacts all the company's activities. Sustainable development is a basic element of business that cannot be seen as a constraint."

Indonesia is in deed of a heifer health service especially concerning women and children from low income bracket that often find difficulties to obtain good healthcare for themselves. Many women cannot have good antenatal care during their pregnancies and this leads to poor nutrition, prolonged labor, and maternal or infant death upon labor. Others find family planning as too expensive and this is the main cause of having more children than they can lake care of Children then felt the impact from the parents' inability to feed or clothe them. Many under-fives are severely malnourished and suffer from multiple infectious diseases. Therefore we can conclude that the present health care system is still inadequate to serve this part of the population. That is why it is important to build a health facility for this purpose. The paper reviews in details about the business model ideally used for such facility called The Salma Project and a sound project proposal to support it. More specifically the business model according to Allan Afuah in Business Model, A Strategic Management Approach, is a framework for making money and consisted of a set of activities which a firm performs, how it performs them, and when it performs them as it uses its resources to perform activities, given its industry, to create superior customer value and put itself in a position to appropriate the value. In this case, the facility is a not for profit one which will depend on the fee for service for its sustainability and donations for start up, other expenses, and further developments. The analysis also includes competitor and stakeholders' analysis. The clinic is basically a health care facility for women and children only focusing on preventive medicine by giving antenatal care for pregnant women, family planning for families, health service for children especially vaccination and nutrition counseling. The project will be located in Tanjung Priok, suburb of Jakarta giving an easy access for the local community which consisted of many middle to low income families. The project opens daily from Monday to Friday from 9 ant till 3 pm providing various services given by a midwife, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, and a pediatrician. The fee ranged front Rp 5,000 to Rp 10,000 and is inclusive of medications, vaccines, or contraceptive devices, The project also has a free weekly health counseling session. From the financial point of view, the project needs approximately Rp 40, 420, 000 for setup cost including initial cost of paper works and clinic permit, cost of facilities, equipments, and supplies. The monthly fixed expenses are approximately Rp 7,125,000 which consisted of salary expense, utilities, rent and telephone expense, supplies, equipment cost, contraception and pharmacy inventory cost, and depreciation. The initial funding for the project will come from donation Rp 85,000,000. From the financial projections, positive cash flow will be maintained throughout the year. For the next years, it is projected that the Clinic will need RP 50, 000, 000 to Rp 60, 000, 000 funding. Patients contribute to the variable costs from the service fee they pay. The project is looking forward for many cooperations with organizations, NGOs, charity foundations, and philanthropists."
