Pada awal didirikannya, partai ini lebih cenderung bersifat anarkis dan radikal, tetapi partai ini mulai berubah menjadi partai yang menyenangkan dan melakukan aksi secara damai. Meskipun partai ini berhaluan kiri, Partai Komunis Jepang tetap memiliki pendukung dari berbagai kalangan. Dukungan yang diberikan untuk Partai Komunis Jepang mengalami peningkatan dan juga penurunan, sehingga hal tersebut berakibat pada elektabilitas dan eksistensinya dalam parlemen Jepang. Banyak pro dan kontra terhadap eksistensi partai ini di Jepang. Eksistensi Partai Komunis Jepang sejak tahun 1945 hingga tahun 1955 diliputi oleh aksi-aksinya dalam menentang kebijakan dan tindakan yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah yang menurut partai ini tidak memihak kepada rakyat Jepang.
