"ABSTRAKTesis ini membahas pemaknaan khalayak media berbasis komunitas interpretif;sebuah konsep yang menekankan pada pemaknaan media secara kolektif sertapengaruh konteks sosial budaya dalam strategi pemaknaan. Dengan menggunakankonsep tersebut, penelitian ini mengangkat topik pemaknaan fiksi gay romantis diantara pembaca perempuan lajang. Penelitian ini adalah studi kualitatif denganparadigma konstruktionisme sosial dan menggunakan fokus grup diskusi sebagaimetode pengambilan data.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fiksi gay romantis menjadi alternatif bacaanakibat ketidakpuasan terhadap representasi perempuan pada media baca lain. Fiksigay romantis juga dimaknai sebagai sarana pelajaran seksualitas, meningkatkanrasa persaudaraan perempuan, sekaligus menumbuhkan kesadaran sosial terhadapkeberadaan gay sebagai kaum minoritas. Secara akademis, penelitian inimemberikan alternatif kajian khalayak di luar analisa resepsi. Penelitian ini jugamemperlihatkan bahwa komunitas yang terbentuk secara online tetap dapatmemiliki strategi pemaknaan yang serupa.

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses the audience process of meaning making based oninterpretive community; a concept that emphasizes on collective interpretationand the influence of socio-cultural context in interpretive strategy. Using thisconcept, the study raises topic on the meaning of gay romance among singlefemale readers. This is a qualitative study with social constructionism paradigm,as method of data collection.Results show that gay romance fiction acts as reading alternative due todissatisfaction with representation of women in other reading media. They alsointerpret gay romance fiction as means to learn about sexuality, to increase thesense of sisterhood as well as to raise social awareness of the existence of gays asa minority. Academically, this study gives an alternative to audience study asidefrom reception analysis. It also shows how online community can still use similarinterpretation strategy."

"The term 'ergativity' is used to describe a grammatical pattern in which the subject of an intransitive clause is treated in the same way as the object of a transitive clause, and differently from transitive subject.
