"Through the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century the Muslim community of Cape Town produced a large number of texts in various fields of Islamic learning, written in Afrikaans, a creolized variety of the language the Dutch traders had brought to South Africa. The Cape Muslim community had its origin in South Asia and Southeast Asia; most of its founding members had been transported by force by the Dutch colonial authorities. Malay was the language in which they had been educated, and for some time it remained in use as the written language. For oral instruction, the Cape Muslim community soon shifted to Afrikaans. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Ottoman scholar Abu Bakr Effendi introduced the use of Afrikaans in Arabic script, replacing Malay as written language. In this paper I deal with the shift from Malay to Afrikaans and the relationship between Malay heritage and Ottoman reform in the Cape community."

"Penelitian ini menyajikan suntingan teks dari naskah Hikayat Nabi Wafat dari Ambon. Dalam penyajian suntingan teks, metode yang digunakan adalah metode edisi kritis. Penelitian ini juga membahas kedudukan Hikayat Nabi Wafat dari Ambon dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan kedudukan Hikayat Nabi Wafat sebagai sastra Islam yang membahas Muhammad dan keluarganya.

"Hikayat Hang Tuah merupakan satu dari sekian banyak naskah kuno Melayu yang keberadaanya cukup popular dan telah menginspirasi banyak orang, khususnya masyarakat Melayu, hingga kini. Sebagai karya sastra, Hikayat Hang Tuah memiliki berbagai aspek terkait penggambaran pemikiran, masyarakat, dan adat-istiadat Melayu. Tulisan ini akan menganalisis etnosentrisme kemelayuan yang tergambar dalam narasi melalui hubungan antartokohnya. Analisis dilakukan terhadap naskah Ml.207 koleksi PNRI yang telah diterbitkan dalam aksara Latin oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Nasional. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif. Data penelitian diperoleh dengan membaca naskah Hikayat Hang Tuah secara berulang-ulang kemudian mencatat bagian-bagian yang  mendukung analisis utama penulis. Teori yang penulis gunakan yaitu teori Coleman dan Cressey (1984) yang mengatakan bahwa orang yang berasal dari suatu kelompok etnis cenderung melihat budaya mereka sebagai yang terbaik. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan bahwa unsur etnosentrisme kemelayuan tergambar melalui narasi antartokoh, khususnya antara tokoh Hang Tuah dan tokoh Gajah Mada. Hal itu dibuktikan melalui penggambaran tokoh Hang Tuah yang berasal dari Melayu mampu memperdayai tokoh Gajah Mada, tokoh dari etnis lain  dengan strategi dan keahliannya.

Hikayat Hang Tuah is one of the many ancient Malay texts whose existence is quite popular and has inspired many people, especially the Malay community, until now. As a literary work, Hikayat Hang Tuah has various aspects related to the depiction of Malay thought, society, and customs. This paper will analyze Malay ethnocentrism which is reflected in the narrative through the relationship between the characters. The analysis was carried out on the manuscript Ml.207 of the PNRI collection which had been published in Latin script by the Ministry of National Education. This study uses a type of qualitative research. The research data was obtained by reading the Hikayat Hang Tuah text repeatedly and then recording the parts that support the author's main analysis. The theory that the writer uses is the theory of Coleman and Cressey (1984) which says that people who come from an ethnic group tend to see their culture as the best. The results of this study found that elements of Malay ethnocentrism were depicted through narratives between characters, especially between Hang Tuah and Gajah Mada figures. This is proven by the depiction of the character Hang Tuah who comes from Malay who is able to deceive the Gajah Mada character, a character from another ethnicity with his strategy and expertise."

"ABSTRAKSufiks merupakan salah satu jenis afiks yang berfungsi untuk membentuksebuah kata. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, di dalam bahasa Melayu, khususnya didalam Hikayat Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi, sufiks –kan, baik yang berdirisendiri sebagai sebuah sufiks di belakang bentuk dasar maupun yang membentukkombinasi afiks, jumlah dan penggunaannya sangat produktif. Oleh karena itu,penelitian ini mengambil sufiks –kan sebagai tema. Penelitian ini adalahpenelitian kualitatif dengan metode analisis deskriptif. Penelitian ini membahaspola-pola pembentukan kata bersufiks –kan, unsur-unsur yang mendampinginya,dan makna kata bersufiks –kan yang ada di dalam Hikayat Abdullah bin AbdulKadir Munsyi.

ABSTRACTSuffix is one of affixes type which has a function to form a word. Basedon this research, in the Malay language, specially in Hikayat Abdullah bin AbdulKadir Munsyi manuscript, -kan suffix which attached on the backside of a base asan independent suffix and –kan suffix which combined with preffix on a base, areproductive. Therefore, this study raised –kan suffix as its theme. This research is aqualitative descriptive analysis method. This study discusses about the patterns ofa –kan suffix word form, the elements which attached on it, and the meanings of–kan suffix word form in Hikayat Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi manuscript."
