"Skripsi ini membahas representasi identitas budaya Shoko sebagai Japanese war bride dalam novel How to Be an American Housewife karya Margaret Dilloway dengan penerapan teori poskolonialisme mengenai konsep identitas budaya oleh Stuart Hall dan konsep hibriditas oleh Homi K. Bhaba. Analisis dilakukan dengan metode kualitatif untuk menelusuri perkembangan identitas budaya Shoko sehingga faktor yang membentuk identitas budaya Shoko, sebab yang menimbulkan ambivalensi di tengah proses mimikri Shoko, dan upaya Shoko untuk mendapatkan identitas hibridanya dapat ditelusuri. Penelitian menunjukan identitas budaya Shoko berkembang hingga akhir karena faktor internal yang merupakan pikiran dan emosi Shoko dan faktor eksternal yaitu lingkungan sosial Shoko yang memberikan pengaruh terhadap keputusan Shoko memilih identitasnya sebagai hibrida dan unsur budaya Jepang dan Amerika yang membentuk identitas hibridanya.

This study discusses cultural identity representation of Shoko as a Japanese war bride in the novel How to Be an American Housewife by Margaret Dilloway with postcolonialsm theory application about Stuart Hall‟s cultural identity concept and Homi K. Bhaba's hybridity concept. The analysis is done by applying qualitative method to analyze Shoko's cultural identity development and figure out the factors that shape Shoko's identity, causes of ambivalence during mimicry and how she obtains hybridity as her final identity.

The result shows that Shoko's cultural identity development is affected by internal factors, which are her thoughts and emotions, external factor, which is the social environment that give impact to her decision in taking hybridity as her final identity, and Japanese and American cultures that shape the hibridity."

"Unsur seksual biasanya dimunculkan dalam bentuk deskripsi erotis pada karya novel populer. Namun, seringkali deskripsi tersebut dianggap berlebihan dan condong ke arah pornografi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat unsur seksual dalam novel populer berjudul How to Stay Single. Analisis tokoh, latar, dan alur dapat menunjukkan deskripsi unsur seksual yang muncul dalam novel. Desain sampul juga menjadi salah satu faktor dalam penyampaian unsur seksual. Meskipun unsur seksual yang dimunculkan dalam novel cenderung berlebihan, hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa novel How to Stay Single tidak termasuk kategori novel porno, melainkan novel populer dengan kategori erotis.

Sexual element usually appear in the form of erotic descriptions on the work of the popular novel. But often these descriptions were considered redundant and leaning towards pornography. This study aims to see the element of sexuality in a popular novel titled How to Stay Single. Analysis of characters, backgrounds, and grooves can show a description of the element of sexuality that appears in the novel. Cover design is also one of the factors in the delivery of sexual element. Although elements of sexuality are raised in the novel tends to be excessive, the analysis shows that the novel How to Stay Single is not categorized as pornographic novels, but the popular novel with erotic category."
