"Violence can be said to lackey contemporary political order and convey viewers only to escapism in society, but is it really so unambiguosly? This paper analyzes violence in poststructuralist sense by asking what kind of functions the cinematic violence can be seen to serve in the films of the era of the Renaissance of the Korean films (from 1996 to 2008). Most of the previous work has not addressed the question as they have dealt with the question of mimetic representation, although some studies (Anna Powell, David Martin-Jones) have paved the way for the poststructuralist readings. The question of violence in Korean cinema is tackled here as an immanent question of affect and percept: if it is a construction of time, then in it lies a chance to open up new perspectives for imaging. There could be new worlds after the violent encounter of thought in films. Key film is Na Hong-jin&rsquos Chugyeogja."

This thesis is focused on the overlooked architecture that can be defined as architectural elements that interact with humans’ activities within the everyday life with such high frequency it creates its own rhythm. The discussion surrounding architecture’s role as a subject within the everyday life is still very much the bare minimum. Humans’ unawareness to everyday life and the limit of our environment perception is to blame. That is the reason why we need an effective method to see through the overlooked architecture and to understand its origins. By that means, this thesis will study the overlooked architecture even deeper through the cinema lens to help us look at architecture from the perspective of everyday life. Using rhythmanalysis, this study is conducted to observe and analyse the rhythm within Still Walking (Kore-eda, 2008) — the film that will be used for the study case in this thesis."

This article discusses how otaku culture as a Japanese visual popular culture is consumed by youths in Jakarta. This culture is also reproduced through self identification. It is argued that otaku culture anime, manga, and video games works to generate mass consumption by offering an image creation or fantasy function. This supports how culture industry works as explained by Adorno and Horkheimer. It is found that otaku culture, on one side supports the principal function of culture industry, but on the other creates a capacity of agency through three stages of otaku identification and reproduction of narratives by its fans. It is also found that otaku culture can become a transnational popular culture for its function that mediates social needs of particular youths with different national backgrounds. Otaku culture becomes a close matter in the lives of particular youths that accompanies them as they grow into adulthood.
