"Style refers to ways of speaking, how speakers use the resource of language variation to make meaning in social encounters. This book develops a coherent theoretical approach to style in sociolinguistics, illustrated with copious examples. It explains how speakers project different social identities and create different social relationships through their style choices, and how speech-style and social context inter-relate. Style therefore refers to the wide range of strategic actions and performances that speakers engage in, to construct themselves and their social lives. Coupland draws on and integrates a wide variety of contemporary sociolinguistic research as well as his own extensive research in this field. The emphasis is on how social meanings are made locally, in specific relationships, genres, groups and cultures, and on studying language variation as part of the analysis of spoken discourse."

"The study of how language varies in social context, and how it can be analysed and accounted for, are the two key goals of sociolinguistics. Until now, however, the actual tools and methods have been largely passed on through ‘word of mouth’ rather than being formally documented. This is the first comprehensive, ‘how-to’ guide to the formal analysis of sociolinguistic variation. It shows step-by-step how the analysis is carried out, leading the reader through every stage of a research project from start to finish. Topics covered include fieldwork, data organisation and management, analysis and interpretation, presenting research results and writing up a paper. Practical and informal, the book contains all the information needed to conduct a fully fledged sociolinguistic investigation, and includes exercises, checklists, references and
insider tips. "

This paper aims to identify the most frequent nouns in the register of the studio photography for beginners. Using the qualitative and descriptive methods, the writer analyzed two articles from a Dutch- and Belgium website: "Studiofotografie: de basis van het werken met studioflitsers" and "Begin je eigen fotostudio thuis. Hou alles zelf in de hand". From the two articles, the writer found seven nouns that were always used in both articles. From those nouns, not all the words have the same meaning in Dutch. Some of the nouns were translated from English to Dutch and some of them remained in their original form, lacking of comparison in Dutch. To understand the meaning of the register, these nouns must be combined with other words.

"The language we use forms an important part of our sense of who we are, of our identity. This book outlines the relationship between our identity as members of groups, ethnic, national, religious and gender, and the language varieties important to each group. What is a language? What is a dialect? Are there such things as language ‘rights’? Must every national group have its own unique language? How have languages, large and small, been used to spread religious ideas? Why have particular religious and linguistic ‘markers’ been so central, singly or in combination, to the ways in which we think about ourselves and others? Using a rich variety of examples, the book highlights the linkages among languages, dialects and identities, with special attention given to religious, ethnic and national allegiances."

ABSTRACT
This research is discussing about identity negotiation of classical musician in the middle of dominant culture in music industries, which refers to popular music omnipresence. The research is conducted by using qualitative methods with critical constructivism approach and is undergone by Stuart Hall rsquo s 1980 reception analysis. The results show that youth informants who are in negotiated and oppositional ldquo reading rdquo positions surprisingly come from classical musician themselves. Classical music, which in this paper belongs to subordinate culture, in certain arena becomes dominant culture, and vice versa. Hence, what is defined by dominant and subordinate culture are interchangeably and contextual. This research is identifying some kind of ldquo Isyana Sarasvati rdquo musician as a ldquo postmodern musician rdquo , which has fluid, flexible, partial, unsecured, and fractured identities, also possibly become dominant and subordinate as well."

Trudgill, Peter
"In the last 500 years or so, the English language has undergone remarkable geographical expansion, bringing it into contact with other languages in new locations. This also caused different regional dialects of the language to come into contact with each other in colonial situations. This book is made up of a number of fascinating tales of historical- sociolinguistic detection. These are stories of origins, of a particular variety of English or linguistic feature, which together tell a compelling general story. In each case, Trudgill presents an intriguing puzzle, locates and examines the evidence, detects clues that unravel the mystery, and fi nally proposes a solution. The solutions are all original, often surprising, sometimes highly controversial. Providing a unique insight into how language contact shapes varieties of English, this entertaining yet rigorous account will be welcomed by students and researchers in linguistics, sociolinguistics and historical linguistics.
