Part of the story After another short pause, Mr. Park replies, his voice serene, "I'll be back." Sister doesn't answer. Out of the blue, she turns over the bowl of coins next to the telephone on the counter and begins to count the few coins inside. When Mr. Park finally makes a movement towards the coffee shop door, Sister begins to laugh hysterically and calls out: "That's wonderful. Congratulations! You don't have to drop by here any more. I'm so grateful. I feel so relieved. Yun-hi! Let's have lunch. I'm hungry. Auntie, is my lunch ready yet?" I'm so nervous! Not because she's so rude. I don't expect anything less from her given her temper. But I am worried about Mr. Park. Being such a gentle person by nature, I am worried that he might simply say, "I won't go then" after what Sister said. Would it make any sense at all if he didn't visit his mother just because of her nasty temper? Only when I hear his footsteps going down on the stairs do I let out a sigh of relief."

We hope that this series helps to build solid bridges between citizens of the world and Koreans through a rich in-depth understanding of Korea. Part of the story I suggested we open a dumpling shop at the place once known as Q's Chinese restaurant. The menu would be mandu dumplings and jjolmyeon spicy noodles. Q would make the dumplings and W would make the noodles. "This girl and I can take the orders and serve the food," I said, tapping her lightly on the head. The high school girl said, "Thank you for counting me in," and started sobbing. "I'm crying because this is too hot. Don't take me wrong." She gulped down the noodles without chewing. I chipped in with the money I'd earned working at the travel agency, and W contributed her income from working part time at the bathhouse. We painted the walls and laid non-slip tiles on the floor. We found an expired lottery ticket at the bottom of the safe. The four of us gathered around and began to scratch it. First, we verified how much the prize money was. One hundred thousand won. The winning number was 5. W moved the coin slowly over the surface. The number 5 slowly revealed itself. "What a pity! If only it hadn't expired," the girl said over and over again. Q stuck the lottery ticket on the wall next to the cash register. "This will bring us good luck," he said."

Part of the story "Sometimes I think about my own death. I think I'd like to be cremated and have the ashes sealed inside a can. I don't like the idea of rotting in the soil underneath a burial mound, and I sure don't want to be stored in one of those marble urns at a crematorium. I've worked at a canning factory my whole life. My whole life I've handled cans. They're making cans with better materials now, and it's become easier to open the lids, which tells me that the world is becoming a better place to live. The changing designs of the can labels tell me that people's tastes are changing. Their actual taste for food also changes. I learn about that when new canned foods are developed or flavors are modified. In other words, I've learned about the world through this can." "If the world were like an empty can, we'd be in trouble.""

"Hye-jin's heart, is alone." I had no idea what the fellow was talking about_whether he was saying that my wife actually had one heart, or that she considered herself to be on her own. Then, as he put his beer can down, the fellow asked for a pen and paper and began to draw. The first thing to appear on the page was a forest. It wasn't the kind of pine forest we might be used to, but something more like a jungle_but at any rate, in this forest lay a baby, its eyes closed. "It was forest. I was baby. I was alone. I was sleeping." Then the fellow drew two eyes on the baby and began to draw tears on either side of the baby's face. Then the baby in the drawing began to cry"

When I die, my nose will probably be the first thing to rot. I've been inhaling stenches from the day I was born, that's why. I'm sure the smell of toxic chemicals traveling through my capillary veins to my brain will make me stupid someday. It doesn't matter, anyways. They say that the more you use your head, the harder it is to live in this world. Father once said, "I used my head and landed in this hell of a place. If only I stayed to raise goats on the mountain or farm in the fields like the other young men... If only I had known to be thankful to the gods for being able to come home to the smell of creamy dahl baht (lentil soup and rice) after washing in the river...""

Hye-ja finished the last of the snow-flower petals that bloomed at the tip of her foot, a flower that had yellow pistils in its center. I looked down at Hye-ja casually, and suddenly I felt goosebumps across my neck."What kind of flowers are these?" I asked. "I don't know."I suddenly remembered something chilling as I watched Hye-ja scurry around and as that nameless flower bloomed from the tip of her tiny rubber shoes. Even before this memory could fully take shape, though, Hye-ja said in a low voice, "Grandma said... my mom, you know, she just died!"I said nothing. Then, I reached down and hugged Hye-ja abruptly. I stared blankly in the direction of Hye-ja's shack through the shroud of descending snow."

His father's replies were the same as usual: "No problem. What on earth could have happened? I'm in good health. Everyone else is doing well too, so there's nothing to worry about." Then his father began to inquire after his family. "What about your family? Are the kids doing okay at school? And you? Are you still traveling back and forth? Must be hard on you. Is your wife in good health, too?" And then, it was his turn to go through the familiar series of replies: His family was all well. Kids were happy at school. He still continued the long-distance commuting. Nothing was wrong with his wife's health. In a way, it always made him gasp for breath. After the exchange of ceremonial words, rushed as if they were chasing after them, they quickly ran out of subjects to talk about"
