"ABSTRAKWacana persuasi muncul tak hanya dalam komunikasi lisan tetapi juga tulisan.Dalam perkembangannya, wacana persuasi terdapat juga dalam karya-karya sastraseperti novel yang menitikberatkan elemen persuasi dalam alur cerita. Penelitianini bertujuan untuk menganalisis wacana persuasi yang terdapat dalam novel TheAlchemist karya Paolo Coelho. Novel ini mengisahkan tentang seorangpenggembala domba bernama Santiago yang sering dipersuasi untuk terusmeneruskan perjalanannya menuju Mesir demi menemukan harta karun di sekitarPiramida yang pernah berulang kali hadir dalam mimpinya. Lebih khususnya,penelitian ini akan meneliti strategi persuasi yang dipraktikkan oleh para tokohpemersuasi, relasi kuasa masing-masing tokoh dengan Santiago, dan identitastokoh Santiago dalam keseluruhan wacana persuasi. Penelitian ini adalahpenelitian berbasis Analisis Wacana Kritis (AWK) dari Norman Fairclough yangdiikuti oleh teori persuasi dari Ehninger, Monroe, dan Gronbeck. Hasil penelitianini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat strategi persuasi dan relasi kuasa yang berbedabedayang digunakan oleh para tokoh pemersuasi. Tokoh Santiago punditokohkan pengarang sebagai tokoh yang inferior dalam keseluruhan data. Hasilpenelitian ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya penelitian dalam karya fiksi yangberbasis AWK dan berguna untuk mendalami kajian ilmu komunikasi, khususnyapersuasi, secara lebih mendalam.

ABSTRACTDiscourses of persuasion are issued not only in spoken but also written means of

communication. Nowadays, such discourses are discovered in a number of

fictional works like novel, whose narration focuses on persuasion theme. The aim

of this research is to analyze discourse of persuasion issued in The Alchemist, a

novel by a well-known author Paolo Coelho. The novel provides a story about a

shepherd named Santiago, who is frequently persuaded to continue his journey to

Egypt in order to discover treasure nearby the Pyramid that has been recurrently

appeared in his dream. This research is specifically purposed to examine three

points; strategies of persuasion practiced by persuaders in the narrative; power

relations among characters; and Santiago?s identity in the whole persuasive

discourse. The research uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method proposed

by Norman Fairclough and persuasion theory from Ehninger, Monroe, and

Gronbeck. The result of this study shows that there is variation in the use of

persuasion strategies and the construction of power relation imposed to Santiago.

Moreover, Santiago is also known to be depicted as an inferior character

throughout the discourse."
