ABSTRAKThis thesis discuss about building common understanding in interpersonalcommunication using Smartphone media with emoticon involvement on itsmessage exchange. This study is focusing on sticker usage in Line, a SmartphonebasedInstant Messenger Application. This is a qualitative study with based onconstructivism paradigm and using in-depth interview as a method of datacollection. Using The Coordinated Management of Meaning Theory, the results inthis research shows that interpreting emoticon symbol can not be interpreted as astand-alone context, the context of emoticon symbol usage that surrounds it alsohas a contribution in interpreting the whole message."
