"Sebagai tempat dimana banyak mahasiswa dari berbagai latar belakang budaya yang berbeda berkumpul bersama, Universitas Indonesia memiliki banyak variasi strategi kesantunan berbahasa dalam percakapan mahasiswanya. Variasi tersebut dapat dilihat dari faktor-faktor penentu pemilihan strategi kesantunan berbahasa para mahasiswa. Jurnal ini memiliki dua tujuan utama. Pertama, gambaran fenomena kesantunan berbahasa akan dianalisis berdasarkan dua teori dari Brown Levinson (1987) dan Grice (1975). Kedua, alasan mengapa mahasiswa memilih suatu strategi tertentu dibanding yang lain juga akan dianalisis berdasarkan gender, umur, kedekatan, latar belakang budaya, dan topik percakapan. Dengan menggunakan dua teori tersebut, jurnal ini menunjukkan bahwa faktor-faktor yang paling menentukan mahasiswa UI Program Studi Inggris 2009 dalam memilih strategi kesantunan berbahasa adalah kedekatan dan gender.

As a place where many students from different background and culture gather together, Universitas Indonesia has many variations of politeness strategies among the student talk. This variation can be seen from factors that determine students' choice of strategy. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. First, the description of politeness phenomenon in conversations among students is investigated based on two theories from Brown Levinson (1987) and Grice (1975). Second, the reason why students choose one particular strategy instead of others also has to be investigated through gender, age, intimacy, cultural background, and the topic of the conversation. Using those two theories, this paper shows factors which mostly determine UI students of English Studies 2009 in choosing their politeness strategies which are intimacy and gender."
