The culture of Japan is influenced by its strategic position on global trade routes. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Portuguese and other European nations traded with the Japanese. The Portuguese, who along with the Spanish at the time were called nanban by the Japanese, brought culinary influences from their own country and colonies into Japanese cuisine. Tempura, kasutera, and konpeitou are examples of the result of this acculturation. Nowadays, Portuguese-influenced Japanese cuisine is known as nanban ryouri."
