"Disertasi ini membahas secara tekstual dan memaknai secara kontekstual cerita-cerita horor Abdullah Harahap. Abdullah Harahap merupakan penulis cerita horor pada tahun 1970—1990-an dengan hampir 100 karya pada kurun waktu dua decade tersebut. Data yang digunakan adalah tiga novel, yaitu Roh dari Masa Lampau (tanpa tahun), Titisan Iblis (1989), dan Misteri Lembah Hantu (1991). Pemilihan data dilakukan dengan melihat wujud makhluk supranatural dari keseluruhan cerita horor Abdullah Harahap. Analisis tekstual ketiga novel tersebut dengan menggunakan model alur cerita horor menghasilkan formula cerita horor Abdullah Harahap, yaitu kekerasan, seksualitas, dan supranatural. Ketiga hal tersebut membentuk cerita yang terus berulang. Di dalam formula tersebut ditemukan adanya legenda dan kepercayaan masyarakat yang direproduksi di dalam karya sastra. Pemaknaan secara kontekstual menghasilkan temuan bahwa pola pikir klenik masih digunakan sebagai pedoman hidup masyarakat. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini memperlihatkan kekhasan cerita horor Abdullah Harahap dan kritik sosial di dalam cerita horor Abdullah Harahap.

This dissertation discusses textually and contextually interprets Abdullah Harahap's horror stories. Abdullah Harahap was a horror story writer in the 1970-1990s with nearly 100 works in the two decades. The data used are three novels, Roh dari Masa Lampau (tanpa tahun), Titisan Iblis (1989), dan Misteri Lembah Hantu (1991). The data is selected by looking at the form of supernatural beings from the whole horror story of Abdullah Harahap. Textual analysis of the three novels using the horror storyline model resulted in Abdullah Harahap's horror story formula, namely violence, sexuality, and the supernatural. The formula form a repeating story. In the formula, it is found that there are legends and people's beliefs that are reproduced in literary works. Contextual meaning results in findings that the occult mindset is still used as a guide for people's lives. Overall, this study shows the peculiarities of Abdullah Harahap's horror story and social criticism in Abdullah Harahap's horror story.

"Dalam cerita detektif, insiden kematian seorang tokoh merupakan titik awal penyuguhan kemisterian cerita kepada para pembaca. Penelitian ini membahas konspirasi kejahatan yang terjadi dalam novel Manekin (2011) karya Abdullah Harahap. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan struktural, yakni pada alur, tokoh, dan latar. Hasil analisis mengungkapkan bahwa konspirasi kejahatan diungkap oleh pihak kepolisian dengan menggunakan metode investigasi standar dan memanfaatkan kekuatan supernatural tokoh. Dalam novel ini, terdapat dua tokoh yang memiliki kekuatan supernatural. Pihak kepolisan memanfaatkan kekuatan supernatural dua tokoh tersebut untuk menangkap para pelaku kejahatan. Para tokoh yang menjalankan konspirasi kejahatan dipimpin oleh seorang tokoh yang memiliki jabatan tinggi di masyarakat. Motif konspirasi kejahatan diungkap dengan cara menelusuri relasi tokoh, alur, dan latar insiden. Demikian, bahwa kekuatan supernatural yang dimiliki dua tokoh tersebut sangat membantu pihak kepolisian dalam mengungkap konspirasi kejahatan dalam novel ini.

In detective stories, the character’s death incident is the starting point for presenting the mystery story’s mystery to the readers. This study discusses the conspiracy of crimes that occurred in a novel titled Manekin (2011) by Abdullah Harahap. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method with a structural approach, including the plot, character, and setting. The result from the analysis found that the crime conspiracy was revealed by the police, using standard investigative methods, and exploiting the character supernatural powers. In this novel, there are two characters who have supernatural powers. The police used the supernatural powers of the two figures to arrest the perpetrators. The characters who run the crime conspiracy are led by a figure who has a high position in society. The motive of the crime conspiracy is revealed by tracing the relationship of the characters, plot, and incident background. Thus, the supernatural powers possessed by these two figures greatly helped the police in uncovering the crime conspiracy in this novel."

"Salah satu cara tokoh perempuan menavigasi jalan mereka melalui masyarakat patriarki adalah dengan memanfaatkan agensi. Kekuatan supernatural dapat menjadi salah satu bentuk kekuatan yang mereka miliki. The Foreshadowing (2006) adalah sebuah sastra anak yang mengambil latar Inggris dan Prancis pada masa Perang Dunia I. Berbeda dari kebanyakan novel anak bertema perang, tokoh utama novel ini adalah remaja perempuan bernama Alexandra. Perbedaan lain dari novel ini yaitu penggunaan kekuatan supernatural sebagai sumber agensi. Dengan menggunakan teori hegemoni gender oleh Schippers (2007) dan agensi perempuan oleh Trites (1997), penelitian ini membahas tokoh Alexandra, ayah, ibu, Tom, dan Jack. Hasil analisis memperlihatkan bahwa novel ini menunjukkan ambivalensi terhadap penggambaran kekuatan supernatural terkait dengan agensi perempuan. Di satu sisi, novel ini menunjukkan kekuatan supernatural sebagai alat yang sangat kuat sehingga dianggap sebagai ancaman oleh sistem patriarki yang direpresentasikan melalui tokoh ayah. Alexandra ditampilkan menggunakan agensinya dengan bantuan kekuatan supernatural untuk menerobos batas-batas peran gender yang berlaku di zamannya. Meskipun demikian, novel ini masih terbatasi oleh peran gender di masa Victoria karena tidak memberikan akses kepada tokoh perempuan untuk terlibat langsung di dalam peperangan.

One way female characters navigate their way through a patriarchal society is by utilizing their agency. Supernatural power can be one form of power they are endowed. The Foreshadowing (2006) is a children‟s literature set in England and France during World War I.Unlike most war-themed children‟s literature, the main character is a teenage girl named Alexandra. What also sets this novel apart is the use of supernatural power as a source of agency. Using theory on gender hegemony by Schippers (2007) and female agency by Trites (1997), this research examines Alexandra, her father, her mother, Tom, and Jack. The findings show that the novel is ambivalent in its portrayal of supernatural power in relation to female agency. On the one hand, the novel demonstrates that supernatural power is such a powerful tool that it poses a threat to the patriarchal system represented through the father. Alexandra is shown to be utilizing her agency with the help of supernatural power to overcome the boundaries set by gender roles during that time. On the other hand, this novel is still limited by Victorian gender roles because it gives no room for the female character to take part actively in the war.

"H.P. Lovecraft menciptakan suatu mitos yang awalnya tidak mendapat perhatian publik sampai setelah kematiannya, dan karya-karyanya, terutama "The Call of Cthulhu" (1928), dianggap sebagai bukti relevansi okultisme baik di bidang sastra maupun studi agama. Cerita pendek ini bercerita tentang sebuah manuskrip yang menjelaskan ditemukannya sekte pemuja dewa yang misterius dan melakukan ritual pembunuhan oleh seorang pria bernama Francis Wayland Thurston. Cerita pendek tersebut dianggap sebagai inti dari "horor kosmik" yang diintegrasikan oleh Lovecraft dalam hampir semua ceritanya. Dengan melakukan hal tersebut, Lovecraft memulai subgenre horor tersendiri dalam lingkaran sastra. Makalah ini menganalisis bagaimana cerita “The Call of Cthulhu” mempengaruhi kepercayaan okultisme modern, yang dapat disimpulkan dari unsur-unsur sastra yang digunakan dalam cerita tersebut. Analisis lebih lanjut juga mengidentifikasi bagaimana Lovecraft mengolah subgenre horror yang ia ciptakan demi menonjolkan elemen okultisme dalam cerita pendeknya. Makalah ini juga menganalisis bagaimana kelompok okultis bernama Ordo Typhonian dipengaruhi oleh unsur-unsur okultisme yang diciptakan oleh Lovecraft dalam cerita, dengan tujuan memperlihatkan relevansi okultisme dalam dunia modern.

H.P. Lovecraft crafted an intricate mythos which initially did not find success until after his death, and his works, most notably “The Call of Cthulhu” (1928), were regarded to be a landmark towards the relevancy of occultism both in the field of literature and religious belief. The short story is about a manuscript of a horrific encounter with a murderous and mysterious deity-worshipping cult by a man named Francis Wayland Thurston. The short story was regarded to be the staple of “cosmic horror” which Lovecraft applied to almost all of his stories, starting his own subgenre of horror in the literary circle. This paper will analyze how “The Call of Cthulhu” influenced the belief of modern occultism, which can be inferred from the literary elements in the story. Further analysis will also identify how Lovecraft portrayed his own subgenre of horror to enhance the elements of occultism within the short story. In relation to the previous elements, the paper will also try to analyze how a particular cult, Typhonian Order, was influenced by the elements of occultism used in the story in order to observe the relevance of the paper in real life."

"Skripsi ini membahas cerita seram dalam lima novel karya Abdullah Harahap yang berjudul Pemenggal Kepala (1993), Langkah-langkah Iblis (1996), Misteri Perawan Kubur (2010), Misteri Ratu Cinta (2013), dan Kolam Darah (2013). Abdullah Harahap adalah penulis cerita seram Indonesia yang produktif. Lima karya tersebut dipilih sebagai objek kajian. Skripsi ini dilakukan melalui pendekatan intrinsik dengan fokus analisis tema dan tokoh. Tujuannya untuk menemukan karakteristik kelima novel tersebut sebagai novel seram khas Indonesia.

This thesis deals with spooky story in five novel of Abdullah Harahap, as follows: Pemenggal Kepala (1993), Langkah-langkah Iblis (1996), Misteri Perawan Kubur (2010), Misteri Ratu Cinta (2013), and Kolam Darah (2013). Abdullah Harahap is a productive Indonesian spooky story writer. Those five novels are selected as reseaech object. This thesis is analyzed from intrinsic approach which focus on the theme and character. The purpose of this thesis is to discove the characteristics of those five novels as Indonesian spooky story."
