"Anglophilia is a kind of state of mind in which the owner (the anglophile) adhores English people or English things. In this research the meaning of this term is broadened into a state of mind of people who adhore white people (including white American) and all their properties (way of life, culture, language, etc). This research tries to undo what has happened to the anglophiles especially those who live in am ex-British and American colonized areas as described in two novels - The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy and Dog-eaters by Jessica I Tagedorn. First, it reveals that the theme of those novels is how the people in the novels, in facing the conflicts between their traditional (eastern) culture and the colonizer's (western) culture, strive for a cultural identity. After that, this research shows how anglophi/ia is developed within the frame of the theme. It can be infered that, then, anglophilia is a dilemma for those people (especially the main characters) as, on one side, it does not give a clear stance to the upholders but, on the other side, it cannot be completely avoided. When the anglophiles try to get rid of the western culture and turn to their ancestors' culture, the are faced with dislocation. They cannot deny that they still need self actualization by embracing the western culture.This research finds out that both novels offer a temporary solution to the problem. It is the idea of hybridization. The conflicts are regarded as historical impact that has to be taken by the new generation in the colonial areas. They are not anymore purely local while, at the same time, the cannot be fully western. Their identity is in the grey area (between black and white). However, as said before, it is a temporary stance since with their position, they are not yet satisfied. They sill continue searching while being active and dynamic in living their life."

"Tesis ini meneliti enam buah roman yang diterbitkan pada tahun 1937-1942. Roman-roman tersebut diterbitkan oleh penerbit swasta dan selama ini digolongkan sebagai "roman picisan". Namun, sebutan "picisan" untuk karya-karya tersebut tidak tepat. Pertama, secara fisik roman-roman tersebut diterbitkan sebagai bagian dari sebuah majalah yang diterbitkan dengan kertas mengkilat, sampul depannya bergambar dan berwarna sehingga majalah tersebut dapat digolongkan sebagai majalah populer. Kedua, roman-roman tersebut ditulis oleh seorang pengarang secara utuh. Tidak seperti karya-karya picisan yang ditulis oleh sebuah tiro. Selain itu, roman-roman tersebut juga ditulis dengan menggunakan bahasa yang baik, yaitu bahasa para Melayu. Oleh sebab itu, roman-roman ini dapat digolongkan sebagai sebuah karya sastra populer.Sebagai sebuah karya sastra populer disebutkan bahwa karya tersebut dapat menjadi dokumen sosial masyarakatnya. Salah satu tema yang menonjol yang disajikan oleh roman-roman tersebut adalah masalah pergaulan bebas. Tema inilah yang dibahas di dalam tesis ini. Pergaulan bebas merupakan salah satu masalah sosial yang menonjol pada masa itu Di dalam tesis ini diuraikan bentuk-bentuk pergaulan bebas yang tergambarkan di dalam roman-roman tersebut serta bagaimana masyarakat di dalam roman-roman itu menyikapinya serta bagaimana pengarang roman itu menyikapi hal tersebut.Ada dua bentuk pergaulan bebas yaitu, pertama, pergaulan bebas yang diartikan sebagai hubungan terbuka antara laki-laki dan perempuan. Mengingat hubungan antara laki-laki dan perempuan pada masa itu (1937-1942) tertutup, dengan adanya sistem pingit dan kawin paksa. Kedua, pergaulan bebas yang diartikan hubungan seks bebas antara laki-laki dan perempuan.Adapun penyebab terjadinya hubungan bebas tersebut adalah dilaksanakannya sistem pendidikan modern dalam masyarakat serta berubahnya kondisi masyarakat pada masa itu dari masyarakat desa menjadi masyarakat perkotaan. Perubahan tersebut memunculkan konflik antara tradisi dan modernitas serta antara Timur dan Barat. Konflik tersebut terwujud dalam sikap masyarakat terhadap adanya masalah pergaulan bebas antara laki-laki dan perempuan, yang terutama melanda kalangan kaum muda intelektual saat itu. Di satu sisi masyarakat menerima sistem pendidikan modern yang mengakibatkan melonggarnya hubungan antara laki-laki dan perempuan karena perempuan ikut serta dalam sistem pendidikan tersebut. Di sisi yang lain, masyarakat menolak pergaulan bebas yang ternyata merupakan efek langsung dari masuknya sistem pendidikan tersebut. Sementara itu, pengarang roman-roman itu dengan memakai karyanya mencoba untuk menasihati pembaca bahwa pergaulan bebas adalah tindakan yang,tidak baik dan harus dihindari."
