ABSTRACT
This Thesis analysis the influence of discourse toward the free will of Sasana in
constructing self Existence process. By using Foucault?s theory of the power of
discourse, the analysis shows that Sasana?s life is never liberated from the power
of discourse that constructing his way of think and his way of act. He defines
himself toward the discourse that requires him to make choice in determining his
way. By using Sartre?s theory of existentialism, the analysis shows that in that
process, he struggle for his free will in the manner of negotiating with the
discourse. He can chooses to be obedient to the power or not and does the thing
that is opposite with the discourse. It is Sasana?s consciousness which eventually
decides to give or not to give the discourse an authority to take control of himself,
because the total self-defining process is the decision of such free will. It can be
concluded that the power of discourse which is represented by the look of other
influences Sasana?s way of constructing his self existence, when he is not faithful
to his free will and refuses to be responsible for it. On the contrary, Sasana is freed
from the discourse?s influence when he is faithful to his determined self existence
and responsible for all consequences from those free will.;This Thesis analysis the influence of discourse toward the free will of Sasana in

The peculiarity seen in Habiburrahman El Shirazy's novels is the emergence of two conflicting narratives, between educated, independent, and empowered women and women who are subject to patriarchal discourse. Based on that, this dissertation aims to reveal the reasons behind the use of narative strategy that shows these two conflicting narratives. The selected research corpus is Habiburrahman El Shirazy's three novels with female main characters, namely Cinta Suci Zahrana, Bidadari Bermata Bening, and Merindu Baginda Nabi. To dissect the narrative strategies used in the three corpus, this study uses Genette's narratological analysis. In addition, Michel Foucault's power of discourse analysis is also used to see how texts use Islamic values to support text’s ideas about Muslim women. The results of the discussion found that the two conflicting narratives were deliberately raised by narrator with the aim of preaching about Muslim women's discourse. The narrator describes that Muslim women are women who are educated, independent, and empowered, but still have an attitude of submission to their husbands and respect for discourses on women's bodies, such as virginity and the womb. From the Indonesian’s cultural context, it can be seen that it is a typical synergism between Javanese culture and Islam. Meanwhile, referring to the socio-political context in Indonesia, the Muslim women's discourse is a form of counterwork to conservative Islamic thought and to liberalism from the West."
