"This book discusses the design and implementation aspects of ultra-low power biosignal acquisition platforms that exploit analog-assisted and algorithmic approaches for power savings. The authors describe an approach referred to as analog-and-algorithm-assisted signal processing. This enables significant power consumption reductions by implementing low power biosignal acquisition systems, leveraging analog preprocessing and algorithmic approaches to reduce the data rate very early in the signal processing chain. They demonstrate savings for wearable sensor networks (WSN) and body area networks (BAN), in the sensors stimulation power consumption, as well in the power consumption of the digital signal processing and the radio link. Two specific implementations, an adaptive sampling electrocardiogram (ECG) acquisition and a compressive sampling (CS) photoplethysmogram (PPG) acquisition system, are demonstrated."

"The increasing interest in the bio-impedance analysis in various fields has increased the demand for portable and low-cost impedance analyzers that can be used in the field. Simplifying the hardware is crucial to maintaining low-cost and portability, but this is not an easy task due to the need for accurate phase and magnitude measurements. This book discusses different portable impedance analyzers design techniques. Additionally, complete designs using two different approaches are reported. The first approach utilizes a commercially available single chip solution while the second one is based on a new measurement technique that eliminates the need to measure the phase by using a software algorithm to extract it from the magnitude information. Applications to the measurement of fruit bio-impedance are emphasized and compared with measurements from professional stand-alone impedance analyzers."

"This book presents an overview of the ways in which the latest experimental and theoretical nanotechnologies are serving the fields of biotechnology, medicine, and biomaterials. They not only enhance the efficiency of common therapeutics and lower their risks, but thanks to their specific properties, they also provide new capabilities. Nano-scale measurement techniques, such as nano-indentation and nano-scratch methods, could potentially be used to characterize the physical and mechanical properties of both natural tissues and synthetic biomaterials in terms of strength and durability."

"This book presents a thorough discussion of the physics, biology, chemistry and medicinal science behind a new and important area of materials science and engineering: polymer nanocomposites. The tremendous opportunities of polymer nanocomposites in the biomedical field arise from their multitude of applications and their ability to satisfy the vastly different functional requirements for each of these applications. In the biomedical field, a polymer nanocomposite system must meet certain design and functional criteria, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, mechanical properties, and, in some cases, aesthetic demands.

Lignin is a pulp and paper fabrication?s waste. Nowadays the utilization of lignin as a new materials is not exessive. Therefore, in this study lignin based polyurethane as a compatibilizer was fabricated by reacting lignin with polyurethane. The syntesis of the polyurethane based lignin used 4,4′-Methylenebis (cyclohexyl isocyanate) or HMDI as diisocyanate andd Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 6000 as the polyol Molar ratio of PEG and HMDI = 1: 1, and 1:4, and lignin content of 0,5 g, 2 g, and 4 g were used as variables of the sample. Samples of polyurethane based lignin was characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, STA, and SEM. The result showed that best product obtained when ratio of PEG : HMDI was 1:4. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and decomposittion temperature of polyurethane-lignin increased when the lignin content increased, while the thermal stability decreased when the lignin content decreased. The surface morphology of polyurethane based lignin was porous and rough."
