As a superpower, China has shown many achievements in terms of high technology; such as increasing the number of research and development (R&D), number of qualified human resources, and producing scientific publications and patents. All these improvements show that China is noted as one among quite a few advanced-technological countries in the world. This achievement was obviously due to a role of the Chinese government in the past. Since the late 1970s, the government has issued a large number of policies designed to reform their technological systems, giving overwhelming endorsement to R&D, fully funding a number of scientists and engineers, and encouraging venture capital investment. The success story of China today especially in technology development cannot be separated from the way of the Chinese Government did in the past, especially in terms of long-terms political and economic strategy. That strategy was launched for the first time under President Deng Xiaoping, who started to open up China for all around the world in the late 1970s. The Chinese government undeniably as a main actor behind the modernization process of technology in the country, which is explained by using Chalmers Johnson's theory of 'developmental state'.

This book discusses the latest advances in manufacturing and process control, with a special emphasis on digital manufacturing and intelligent technologies for manufacturing and industrial processes control. The human aspect of the developed technologies and products, their interaction with the users, as well as sustainability issues, are covered in detail. Development of new products using 3D printers, rapid prototyping systems, remote fabrication, and other advanced techniques, is described in detail, highlighting the state-of-the-art and current challenges. Other key topics include digital modeling systems and additive manufacturing, together with their applications in a number of fields, e.g in bioengineering/biomedicine, in the aerospace, maritime and military fields or for archeological and historical purposes, such as preserving structures, but not limited to this. The book is based on three AHFE 2018 affiliated conferences i.e. the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Advanced Production Management and Process Control, the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Human Aspects of Advanced Manufacturing, and the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Additive Manufacturing, Modeling Systems and 3D Prototyping, which were held on July 21-25, 2018, in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Hackers, cyber-criminals, Dark Web users, and techno-terrorists beware! This book should make you think twice about attempting to do your dirty work in the smart cities of tomorrow. Scores of cities around the world have begun planning what are known as “smart cities.” These new or revamped urban areas use the latest technology to make the lives of residents easier and more enjoyable. They will have automated infrastructures such as the Internet of Things, “the Cloud,” automated industrial controls, electronic money, mobile and communication satellite systems, wireless texting and networking. With all of these benefits come new forms of danger, and so these cities will need many safeguards to prevent cyber criminals from wreaking havoc. This book explains the advantages of smart cities and how to design and operate one. Based on the practical experience of the authors in projects in the U.S. and overseas in Dubai, Malaysia, Brazil and India, it tells how such a city is planned and analyzes vital security concerns that must be addressed along the way. Most of us will eventually live in smart cities. What are the advantages and the latest design strategies for such ventures? What are the potential drawbacks? How will they change the lives of everyday citizens? This book offers a preview of our future and how you can help prepare yourself for the changes to come.
