"Orientalisme adalah sebuah evaluasi terhadap teks-teks Barat yang selalu menggambarkan budaya ketimuran sebagai inferior dan menggambarkan Timur secara klise dan dalam stereotip tertentu. Penelitian ini mengamati representasi Orientalisme yang digambarkan dalam film Bicycle Bride (2010) dan film The Big Sick (2017). Analisis ini menggunakan kerangka teoretis Orientalisme yang dikemukakan oleh Edward Said (1978) dengan meneliti representasi orang Asia Selatan dan Kaukasia dalam dua film ini. Pendekatan teoritis dari penelitian ini berkonsentrasi pada analisis tekstual yang berfokus pada karakter dan narasi verbal. Selain itu, makalah ini juga mempertimbangkan aspek non-narasi, seperti visual dan audio, terutama bagaimana mereka menggambarkan diskriminasi perempuan Asia Selatan. Temuan pada makalah ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam dua film ini, masyarakat Timur digambarkan sebagai kuno, tidak rasional, kurang memiliki rasa individualitas, dan tidak mau belajar dan tumbuh melalui adaptasi bahasa lokal. Sementara itu, orang-orang Barat digambarkan sebagai orang yang baik hati, dan penyelamat dengan menghadirkan orang-orang Asia Selatan sebagai orang yang mempunyai budaya dan sosial yang kurang dan tidak memiliki agensi untuk mengatasi situasi mereka yang terpinggirkan.

Orientalism is an evaluation of Western texts that have always represented the East as an inferior other and constructs the East by giving stereotypical images and clichés. This paper observes the representation of Orientalism depicted in Bicycle Bride (2010) and The Big Sick (2017). The analysis is done within the theoretical framework of Orientalism proposed by Edward Said (1978) by examining the representations of South Asians and Caucasians in these two movies. The theoretical approach of this study concentrates on textual analysis focusing on the characters and verbal narratives. Moreover, this paper also takes into account the non-narrative aspects, such as visual and audio, especially how they portray the discrimination of South Asian women. The findings suggest that in these two movies, the orients are being portrayed as old fashioned, irrational, lacking all sense of individuality, and not willing to learn and grow through adaptation of the local language. Meanwhile, the Westerns are portrayed as good-natured, and saviors by presenting South Asians as cultural and socially deficient and lacking the agency to overcome their marginalized situations."

"The movement of Asian citizens across continents now occurs on an unprecedented scale, with a surge in Asian tourists now visiting Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania. Tourists from China, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and to a lesser extent Korea and Japan are meeting the citizens of cultures they had previously only been able to read about or view from afar. This book seeks to understand the experiences of, and reactions to, Asian tourists travelling out of Asia.Questions about Asian tourist contact with unfamiliar countries and cultures will be addressed. What impacts are they having on host communities, both in terms of the provision and co-creation of desired experiences and in the human dimensions of social contact? The volume addresses fresh implications for marketing, planning and policy which these tourist markets pose for good governance. This book confronts the limitations of our understanding of how to manage the tourist experience when that understanding has been built almost entirely on the behaviours and travels of western tourists. "Film merupakan sebuah produk budaya yang mewarisi nilai-nilai dan makna dari realitas hidup. Di antara banyak film yang diproduksi oleh industri film Hollywood, ada beberapa film yang dibuat untuk menggambarkan budaya dan nilai orang-orang Asia. Crazy Rich Asians (2018), disutradai dan ditulis oleh orang Amerika keturunan Asia, adalah salah satu dari film yang memiliki tujuan tersebut. Film tersebut, yang membuat kesuksesan box office, melibatkan sebagian besar pemeran orang Asia, dan banyak penelitian telah dilakukan tentang penggmbaran karakter wanita dalam film tersebut dan masalah dikotomi pada nilai Timur-Barat. Studi tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa representasi tokoh laki-laki Asia dalam film ini telah bergeser dari stereotipe orang Asia pada zaman dahulu, namun masih tergambar secara parsial melalui sudut pandang Barat.

A film is a cultural product that inherits values and meanings from the reality of life. Among many films produced by the Hollywood film industry, there are a number of films that are made to portray Asian`s culture and values. Crazy Rich Asians (2018), directed and written by Asian Americans, is one of the films that serves the purpose. The film, which made a box office success, involved largely Asian casts, and many studies have been conducted on the portrayal of the female characters in the film and the issue of East-West values dichotomy. This qualitative study aims to further discuss the male characters in the film, which is still lacking. It aims to provide insights on how the male characters are represented in the film, its relation to the reality, and the ideology behind the representation based on a semiotic theory called `The Codes of Television` by John Fiske. It also examines how the orientalism becomes one of the major ideologies implied in the film. The study reveals that the representation of Asian male characters in this film have shifted from the old Asians` stereotypes, yet it is still partially portrayed through the Western`s point of view."
