"Kegiatan bersepeda di ibukota Jakarta merupakan tantangan yang berat karena masih minimnya fasilitas untuk pesepeda, kriminalitas dan juga perilaku kendaraan bermotor masih belum bisa toleran dengan pengguna sepeda. Namun semua hambatan untuk bersepeda adalah infrastruktur. Tantangan berat itu bertambah untuk perempuan, selain belum terjaminnya keselamatan pesepeda, perempuan menghadapi tantangan yang lebih mengerikan yakni tantangan rentannya posisi perempuan pesepeda terpapar dan menderita pelecehan seksual.  Penelitian ini berusaha menjelaskan pengalaman perempuan pesepeda di pengaruhi konstruksi gender mengenai seksualitas dan bagaimana perempuan pesepeda berstrategi mewujudkan rasa aman dan dianalisis dengan teori Ketakutan dari Gill Valentine dan Gender dan Mobilitas dari Susan Hanson. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode observasi dan wawancara.  Data diperoleh melalui wawancara kepada 5 subjek dan observasi tidak terstruktur peneliti. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan pendekatan berperspektif feminis untuk menggali lebih dalam pengalaman perempuan pesepeda. Hasilnya menjadi perempuan pesepeda di ruang publik urban sangatlah sulit. Perempuan yang memilih bersepeda sebagai alat transportasi, harus menerima pembatasan dari keluarga dan orang terdekatnya karena ia seorang perempuan. Pembatasan tersebut berdasarkan konstruksi gender yang masih sangat melekat dalam masyarakat Indonesia. Selain itu, perempuan pesepeda juga harus menghadapi hambatan yang lebih berat di ruang publik urban Jakarta, yaitu berupa beragam bentuk kekerasan seksual dari pengguna ruang publik lainnya.  Pengguna jalan lain khususnya laki-laki melihat perempuan pesepeda masih sebagai objek di ruang publik urban, bukan sebagai subjek. Implikasinya membuat perempuan pesepeda semakin minim di jalanan ibukota. Ini membuat perempuan pesepeda harus menyusun strategi untuk mengatasi rasa takut dan membuat mereka merasa aman untuk bersepeda di ruang publik jalanan ibukota yang didominasi oleh pengguna laki-laki.

due to the lack of facilities and infrastructure for cyclists. It doesn’t stop there, the threat of crime and the behavior of motorized vehicles that are still unable to tolerate bicycle users. The formidable challenge increases for women. Apart from not ensuring the safety of cyclists, women face a more dire challenge, namely the vulnerability of the position of women cyclists to being exposed to sexual harassment. This study seeks to explain the experiences of women cyclists influenced by gender construction regarding sexuality, as well as how women cyclists have strategies to create a sense of security. The specific theory used is the 'theory of fear' from Gill Valentine and 'gender and mobility' from Susan Hanson. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods of observation and interviews. Data were obtained through interviews with 5 subjects and unstructured observations. This study also uses a feminist perspective approach to dig deeper into the experiences of women cyclists. The results of the study show that the activities of women cyclists in urban public spaces face many challenges. Women who choose cycling as a means of transportation, do not get support from the closest people and get restrictions based on gender construction which is still very much embedded in Indonesian society. In addition, female cyclists also face more severe obstacles in Jakarta's urban public spaces, namely in the form of various forms of sexual violence from other public space users. Other road users, especially men, see female cyclists as objects in urban public spaces, not as subjects. The implication is that there are fewer women cyclists on the streets of the capital. Policy actors need to present policies and their implementation that can fulfill a sense of security for women cyclists in public spaces."

"Penerapan sistem kekerabatan patrilineal di Bali berimplikasi pada konstruksi gender di masyarakat yang tidak adil bagi perempuan Bali. Penomorduaan hingga triples roles pada perempuan menjadi fenomena yang nyata di lingkungan masyarakat Bali. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat sejauh mana perempuan dewasa muda Bali menunjukkan konformitas terhadap konstruksi gender pada masyarakat Bali atau keberanian untuk melakukan perubahan. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif untuk menggali dinamika kompleks antara perempuan Bali dan konstruksi gender di masyarakat, serta bagaimana penghayatan perempuan Bali dalam melakukan perubahan. Penelitian ini melibatkan 10 partisipan perempuan dewasa muda Bali yang memiliki tingkat modernitas berbeda-beda. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa seluruh partisipan merasa belum memiliki kekuatan untuk melakukan perubahan terhadap ketidakadilan konstruksi gender di masyarakat. Meskipun begitu, terdapat optimisme pada perubahan di masa depan oleh generasi muda.

The implementation of the patrilineal kinship system in Bali has implications for gender construction in society that is unfair to Balinese women. The subordination and triple roles of women has become a real phenomenon in Balinese society. This research aims to see the extent to which young adult Balinese women show conformity to gender construction in Balinese society or the courage to make changes. This research was conducted using qualitative method to explore the complex dynamics between Balinese women and gender construction in society, as well as how Balinese women perceive change. This research involved 10 young adult Balinese female participants who had different levels of modernity. The results of this research show that all participants felt they did not have the power to make changes to the injustice of gender construction in society. However, there is optimism about future changes by the younger generation."

"Konstruksi gender merupakan sebuah masalah yang sudah ada sejak dulu hingga sekarang. Permasalahan tersebut muncul antara laki-laki dan perempuan karena adanya banyak perbedaan dalam peran yang dimiliki, fungsi, dan tanggung jawab. Konstruksi gender bahkan sudah terlihat saat bayi baru lahir. Penelitian ini bertujuan mencari tahu bagaimana perbandingan konstruksi gender dalam poster iklan rokok Belanda (Caballero 1980, Caballero 1995, dan Marlboro 1999) dengan poster iklan rokok dari Indonesia (Djarum Super 1985, Djarum Super 1989, dan Gudang Garam 1999). Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan teori semiotika Roland Barthes mengenai makna denotasi dan konotasi, penelitian ini membandingkan representasi konstruksi gender berdasarkan teori J. MacInnes pada tiga poster iklan rokok Belanda dengan tiga poster iklan rokok Indonesia. Analisis menghasilkan kesimpulan bahwa poster iklan rokok Indonesia lebih banyak memunculkan konstruksi gender dibandingkan poster iklan rokok Belanda. Poster iklan rokok Belanda memperlihatkan nilai toleransi lebih tinggi karena tokoh dengan gender yang berbeda digambarkan sebagai individu yang setara.

Gender construction is a problem that has existed until now. These problems arise because of the differences in roles, functions and responsibilities between men and women. Gender construction can even be seen when a new baby is born. This study aims to compare gender construction in Dutch cigarette advertising posters (Caballero 1980, Caballero 1995, and Marlboro 1999) with cigarette advertising posters from Indonesia (Djarum Super 1985, Djarum Super 1989, and Gudang Garam 1999). This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and Roland Barthes' semiotic theory which discusses the meaning of denotation and connotation. This study compares the representation of gender construction based on J. MacInnes theory on three Dutch cigarette advertisement posters with three Indonesian cigarette advertisement posters. The analysis concludes that Indonesian cigarette advertisement posters generate more gender constructs than Dutch cigarette advertisement posters. Dutch cigarette advertisement posters show a higher tolerance value because characters with different genders are depicted as equal individuals."

"Sherlock BBC (2010) merupakan salah satu karya adaptasi Sherlock Holmes yang terbaru. Dengan mengangkat latar waktu era modern, Sherlock menawarkan suatu hal yang berbeda dari karya-karya adaptasi Sherlock Holmes sebelumnya. Penelitian ini berfokus pada representasi tokoh wanita di dalam serial televisi Sherlock melalui isuisu yang telah penulis tentukan, yaitu seksualitas, kriminalitas, dan posisi wanita dalam ruang privat. Penulis menggunakan teori konstruksi gender, konsep femmefatale dan karakteristik fiksi kriminal untuk menganalisis data. Penulis berpendapat bahwa ada beberapa perbedaan yang muncul di dalam representasi tokoh wanita pada serial televisi Sherlock dan karya aslinya. Kesimpulan akhir yang didapat dari analisis ini adalah adanya pengukuhan posisi tokoh wanita sebagai sosok inferior yang selalu membutuhkan pertolongan dari tokoh pria di dalam serial televisi Sherlock, sesuai dengan karakteristik dominasi fiksi kriminal yang ada selama ini.

Sherlock BBC (2010) is one of the latest adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. By using the modern era as its setting, Sherlock offers something different compared to previous Sherlock Holmes adaptations. This research focuses on the representation of female characters on Sherlock according to some issues which are, women and sexuality, crime, and position of female characters in the private space. The theories and concepts which are used on this research are gender construction in Victorian Era, the concept of femme-fatale and crime fiction characteristics. I argue that there are some substantial differences of female characters’ representation in Sherlock compared to the original story. Despite those differences, female characters in Sherlock are still represented in a similar manner as the crime fictions characteristics in which women are always put in an inferior position and the one who need men’s help."

"Youtube kini telah menjadi salah satu situs internet pilihan yang digunakan untuk bertukar informasi dalam bentuk video. Terlebih lagi, situs ini memberikan akses yang mudah bagi penggunanya untuk berkomentar secara bebas dan direktif terhadap video yang ditonton. Dalam skripsi ini, penulis akan membahas video musik If I Were a Boy (2010) karya Beyonce Knowles beserta komentar penontonnya di Youtube. Penulis berpendapat bahwa secara tekstual video musik ini menciptakan konstruksi tersendiri, yakni menguatkan norma patriarki yang ada di masyarakat. Berbeda dengan penelitian yang sudah banyak dilakukan, penulis tidak berhenti pada tahap ini. Dengan menerapkan konsep encoding-decoding milik Stuart Hall (1973), penulis melihat adanya sikap kritis penonton yang ditunjukkan melalui banyaknya jumlah respon. Terkait dengan tiga posisi penonton milik Hall, penulis menemukan sedikit perbedaan dari segi jumlah responden yang menempati masing-masing posisi tersebut. Pada kenyatannya, fenomena ini merupakan bentuk nyata dari adanya cyberculture dimana penonton memanfaatkan Youtube sebagai sebuah ruang untuk memaknai teks digital dan bernegosiasi dengan stereotip gender dengan memberikan respon.

Youtube is one of the favorite sites to share videos. Moreover,it facilitates the users to give a free and direct comment toward the videos they watch. This undergraduate thesis examines the music video entiled If I Were a Boy (2010) by Beyonce Knowles as well as the authentic responses from the viewers in Youtube. I argue that this music video creates a conventional gender construction which perpetuates the patriarchal norms in the society. As an attempt to give a new perspective on the similar kind of research, I do not stop at this point. Applying the concept of encoding-decoding by Stuart Hall (1973), I found the audience's being critical which can be seen from the total number of the responses and the controversy within. In accordance to the three hypothetical position argued by Hall, I found a different portion of the audience in each position. As a matter of fact, this phenomenon contributes to the cyberculture in which Youtube is seen as a functional space to make meaning of a digital text and negotiate with the constructed stereotype by giving comments."

"ABSTRAKSkripsi ini membahas konstruksi gender dalam drama televisi Gomenne Seishun. Bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana konstruksi gender ditunjukkan dalam Gomenne Seishun terutama melalui aspek naratif dan visual. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif analitis yang membahas segi naratif dan visual objek penelitian. Analisis menggunakan struktur naratif dari Algirdas Julian Greimas sebagai landasan teori, dan teori wacana feminisme oleh Judith P. Butler sebagai landasan konseptual. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Gomenne Seishun merepresentasikan konstruksi gender masyarakat Jepang dari segi struktur dan narasinya.

ABSTRACTThis thesis is about gender construction in television drama Gomenne Seishun. The aim of this thesis is to describe how Gomenne Seishun shows resistance against gender construction from narrative and visual aspects. This research uses descriptive analitic method which discusses narrative and visual aspects of the research object. The analysis based on narrative structural theory by Algirdas Julian Greimas as basis theory, and theory of feminism by Judith P. Butler as basis conceptual. This research found that Gomenne Seishun representate the resistance against gender construction in Japan society by the structure and naration."

"Serial TV Crime Fiction merupakan salah satu produk audiovisual yang lekat dengan kehidupan masyarakat karena kisahnya yang diambil dari kejahatan yang terjadi di sekitar kita. Jurnal ini membahas serial TV Sherlock Holmes yang ditayangkan di saluran BBC seluruh dunia dengan menyentuh isu gender yaitu peran dan konstruksi gender. Tokoh wanita yang digambarkan berbeda dengan stereotipe gender yang berlaku di masyarakat tradisonal membuat peneliti ingin menggali lebih dalam bagaimana dualisme peran feminin-maskulin bekerja didalam film melalui kedua tokoh wanitanya. Selain itu, jurnal ini juga menjawab bagaimana kedua tokoh wanita diperlakukan ketika tidak mengikuti aturan yang berlaku di masyarakat tradisional. Peneliti menggunakan Item ndash; item yang terdapat dalam Alat Ukur Bem Sex Role Inventory untuk mendukung peneliti dalam melakukan pembahasan. Pada akhirnya serial TV ini membuka kesempatan merekonstruksi definisi dan peran gender wanita yang selama ini telah terinternalisasi di dalam kehidupan masyarakat.

Crime Fiction TV Serial is the one of audiovisual product which is close to the society livehood because the stories were taken from criminals that happened among us. This journal analyzes the Sherlock Holmes TV serial that has been broadcast in BBC Worldwide channel by touching its gender issuses such as roles and gender construction. The different depicting ways of the women characters from those prevailing in the society drives the writer to dig deeper how these feminine masculine dualism role works in this film through both of the women characters. Morevoer, this journal is also answers how both of the women characters were treated when they didn't follow the prevailing rules. Writer use the items in Bem Sex Role Inventory Measurment Instrument to supports writer expose the discussion. In the end this TV serial open the chance to reconstruct the definition of women gender role that has been internalized in our society."

"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami bagaimana proses genderisasi yang terjadi pada satu bidang pekerjaan yaitu chef, melalui nilai-nilai maskulinitas yang dikonstruksi di dalam dapur profesional. Masalah penelitian akan dijawab melalui pendekatan kualitatif dan metode penelitian etnografi. Sejumlah data-data lapangan didapat dari hasil observasi, partisipasi observasi, wawancara mendalam dan studi pustaka. Hasil temuan lapangan menunjukkan bahwa konsep maskulinitas dikonstruksi melalui cara bekerja, tantangan kerja, tekanan kerja, yang harus dijalankan dan dilewati oleh para chef, bagaimana mereka merespon setiap kejadian, cara berekspresi dan berperilaku di segala situasi selama bekerja. Dalam praktiknya, laki-laki maupun perempuan juga menemui masalah yang berbeda-beda untuk dapat membuktikan bahwa mereka mampu bekerja di dapur profesional. Memasak yang semula dan sampai hari ini masih dikonstruksikan sebagai pekerjaan domestik perempuan, nyatanya berubah ketika berada di ranah publik. Memasak di dapur profesional tidak lagi memperlihatkan sifat-sifat feminin perempuan. Nilai-nilai maskulin yang dikonstruksi melalui cara kerja chef bukan hanya membentuk identitas maskulin pada setiap individu yang melakukannya, melainkan juga kepada profesi tersebut.

This study aims to understand how an occupation is gendered. In this case, chef profession is gendered through the construction of masculinity in a professional kitchen. The research questions are answered with the qualitative approach and ethnography method, while the data are collected through observation, participation of observation, depth interview and literature review. My findings show that the concept of masculinity shaped and constructed within the work’s barriers, challenges, and pressure. It also has something to do with how the kitchen staffs have to deal with all the expected and unexpected situations during work, how they behave and express themselves. Both men and women face different problems to prove that they are able to work in a professional kitchen and they deserve the job. Cooking is considered and constructed as a domestic work and related to women’s work, but as in a public spheres such as professional kitchen, it became a men’s work. Masculinity that has been constructed through the work of chefs, not only represents a masculine identity on the individuals but also represents to the profession itself."
