"Tesis ini adalah hasil penelitian antropologis tentang proses pembentukan identitas sosial oleh orang Bajo dalam program konservasi alam. Studi dilakukan terhadap kasus pelaksanaan kegiatan pengembangan Daerah Perlindungan Laut (DPL) oleh sebuah LSM dan orang-orang Bajo di Kepulauan Togean.Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa konservasi alam telah digunakan beberapa orang Bajo untuk membentuk identitas sosial mereka yang membedakannya dari "perusak terumbu karang". Tesis ini memahami proses pembentukan identitas sosial bersifat kontinyu, tidak permanen, dan kontekstual. Identitas di(re)produksi lewat proses sosial di mana "artikulasi" dan "pemosisian" guna membangun batas-batas antara "perusak karang" dan "konservasionis" dalam berbagai konteks interaksi sosial.

This thesis is from anthropological research on social identity construction process by the Bajonese people engaging in nature conservation project. The study based on case of implementation of Community-based Marine Protected Area project by an NGO and a group of Bajonese people in Togean Islands.The study concludes that nature conservation project have been used by some of Bajonese people to articulate their new social identity distinguishing them from being labelled as the "coral reef destroyers". This thesis comprehends construction of social identity is contingent, not permanent, and contextual. Identity is (re)produced by social process where the "articulation" as well as "positioning" occure in making of social boundary between "coral reef destroyer" and "conservationist" in various context of social interaction."

"Buku ini cukup menarik perhatianku, karena aku seorang pencinta alam. Sekilas buku ini terkesan berat materinya ketika aku menggenggamnya. Halaman demi halaman kubuka dari belakang ke depan.Topik-topik yang disajikan cukup menarik karena sesuai dengan apa yang terjadi di Indonesia. Ini setara dengan 51 km2 per hari. Angka yang sangat fantastis tentunya.Aku terkesan dengan kedalaman berpikir ibu Utami ini. Ia mampu menyajikan materi konservasi sumber daya alam dengan bahasa yang mudah dicerna sehingga tidak membuat kepalaku pusing.Sebagai pencinta laut, walau bukan seorang pelaut, aku semakin dicerahkan oleh cara bu Utami memaparkan seberapa jauh intervensi manusia telah merusak ekosistem terumbu karang mulai dari tingkat global hingga ke dalam wilayah Indonesia sendiri.Beliau tidak hanya memaparkan masalah melainkan juga memberikan solusi. Sebenarnya masyarakat tradisional Indonesia telah mengenal sistem pemanfaatan sumber daya alam secara ramah lingkungan. Contohnya, pertanian di lereng-lereng gunung menerapkan petakan persawahan bergaya terasering dan rorak untuk menghindari terjadinya tanah longsor. Memang nenek moyang kita, bukan hanya orang pelaut tetapi juga, petani yang ulung."
