"Papers appearing in this volume are the Invited Talks given at ICIAM 2003, the 5th International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, held in Sydney over the period July 7 to 11, 2003. The Congress celebrates and describes the contributions of applied mathematics -- as an intellectual creation in its own right, as a foundation stone of technological development, and as an indispensable collaborative partner for other scientific disciplines. These aspects of applied mathematics have held true since the dawn of civilization. They will remain just as important in the new millennium. The authors of these papers are all acknowledged masters of their fields, having been chosen through a rigorous selection process by a distinguished International Program Committee.
This volume presents an overview of contemporary applications of mathematics, with the coverage ranging from the rhythms of the nervous system, to optimal transportation, elasto-plasticity, computational drug design, hydrodynamic and meteorological modeling, and valuation in financial markets.

"The purpose of this book is to introduce undergraduate students of engineering and the physical sciences to applied mathematics often essential to the successful solutions of practical problems. The topics selected are a review of Differential Equations, Laplace Transforms, Matrices and Determinants, Vector Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Complex Variables, and Numerical Methods. The style of presentation is such that the step-by-step derivations may be followed by the reader with minimum assistance. Liberal use of approximately 160 examples and 1000 homework problems serves to aid students in their study. This book presents mathematical topics using derivations (similar to the technique used in engineering textbooks) rather than theorems and proofs typically found in textbooks written by mathematicians. Engineering Analysis is uniquely qualified to help apply mathematics to physical applications (spring-mass systems, electrical circuits, conduction, diffusion, etc.), in a manner as efficient and understandable as possible.
This book was written to provide for an additional mathematics course after differential equations, to permit several topics to be introduced in one semester, and to make the material comprehensible to undergraduates. The book comes with an Instructor Solutions Manual, available on request, that provides solutions to all problems and also a Student Solutions Manual that provides solutions to select problems (the answers to which are given at the back of the book)."

"This book is designed to serve as a core text for courses in advanced engineering mathematics required by many engineering departments. The style of presentation is such that the student, with a minimum of assistance, can follow the step-by-step derivations. Liberal use of examples and homework problems aid the student in the study of the topics presented.
Ordinary differential equations, including a number of physical applications, are reviewed in Chapter One. The use of series methods are presented in Chapter Two, Subsequent chapters present Laplace transforms, matrix theory and applications, vector analysis, Fourier series and transforms, partial differential equations, numerical methods using finite differences, complex variables, and wavelets. The material is presented so that four or five subjects can be covered in a single course, depending on the topics chosen and the completeness of coverage.
Incorporated in this textbook is the use of certain computer software packages. Short tutorials on Maple, demonstrating how problems in engineering mathematics can be solved with a computer algebra system, are included in most sections of the text. Problems have been identified at the end of sections to be solved specifically with Maple, and there are computer laboratory activities, which are more difficult problems designed for Maple. In addition, MATLAB and Excel have been included in the solution of problems in several of the chapters.
There is a solutions manual available for those who select the text for their course. This text can be used in two semesters of engineering mathematics. The many helpful features make the text relatively easy to use in the classroom."

"This textbook presents basic numerical methods and applies them to a large variety of physical models in multiple computer experiments. Classical algorithms and more recent methods are explained. Partial differential equations are treated generally comparing important methods, and equations of motion are solved by a large number of simple as well as more sophisticated methods. Several modern algorithms for quantum wavepacket motion are compared. The first part of the book discusses the basic numerical methods, while the second part simulates classical and quantum systems. Simple but non-trivial examples from a broad range of physical topics offer readers insights into the numerical treatment but also the simulated problems. Rotational motion is studied in detail, as are simple quantum systems. A two-level system in an external field demonstrates elementary principles from quantum optics and simulation of a quantum bit. Principles of molecular dynamics are shown. Modern bounda
ry element methods are presented in addition to standard methods, and waves and diffusion processes are simulated comparing the stability and efficiency of different methods. A large number of computer experiments is provided, which can be tried out even by readers with no programming skills. Exercises in the applets complete the pedagogical treatment in the book. In the third edition Monte Carlo methods and random number generation have been updated taking recent developments into account. Krylov-space methods for eigenvalue problems are discussed in much more detail. The wavelet transformation method has been included as well as simple applications to continuum mechanics and convection-diffusion problems. Lastly, elementary quantum many-body problems demonstrate the application of variational and Monte-Carlo methods.

McKinley, Arnold
"This book develops the analytical theory of perfectly conducting and lossy metal, circular, round-wire loop antennas and nano-scaled rings from the radio frequency (RF) regime through infrared and the optical region. It does so from an antenna theory perspective. It is the first time that all of the historical material found in the literature has appeared in one place. It includes, particularly, material that has appeared in the literature only in the last decade and some new material that has not yet been published. The book derives the input impedance, resonances and anti-resonances, the RLC circuit model representation, and radiation patterns not only of closed loops and rings, but also of loops and rings loaded randomly and multiply with resistive and reactive impedances. Every derivation is compared with simulations run in Microwave Studio (MWS). It looks carefully at the physical response of loop antennas and nano-rings coupled to a source at one point in the periphery and at such rings illuminated by a plane wave arriving from every different direction with the E-field in all polarizations. The book ends with a brief look at polygonal loops, two dimensional arrays of nano-rings, and Yagi-Uda arrays."
