"Accesibility and quality of education especially for higher education has been a constant concem for the developing countries including South East Asian countries. Open and distance education (ODL) system seems to be the answers for increasing accesibility because of its cost effectiveness and flexibility. This article adresses efforts in expanding the quantity and improving quality in some ODL institutions in South East Asia. This article also presents specific exsperience and lessons learnt from Indonesia, particularly Universitas Terbuka, in responding to the issues of quantity expansion, improvement of student participation in higher education, and continual quality improvement of ODL."

"As a distance education institution, Universitas Terbuka (UT) employs an independent learning system where the learning materials are delivered to the students through media, mostly in text materials. As a consequence of the learning system employed by UT, the students do not have any chance in practical activities. In some of the study programs in UT, the practical materials are delivered to the student through text materials. In conventional university, the practical course materials usually are delivered in the face-to-face mode through practical activities. From the practical material the students are expected to have practical skills. However, because of the independent learningsystem employed by UT, it is difficult for UT to conduct face to face practical activities. This article discusses a way to handle the mentioned problem by developing audio-visual learning media in the from of interactive video program, especially, a case of Public Speaking Suject in the Communication Studies Program, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in UT. The article discusses about a subject contains materials about public speaking techniques. These practical materials, such as body language, speaking style, and the use of presentation tools, would be expected to be a solution in reaching the competence of practical courses when delivered to the students through audio-visual examples."

"Latar Belakang: Pada akhir Desember 2019, wabah pneumonia yang ditandai dengan demam, batuk kering dan kelelahan serta gejala gastrointestinal terjadi di pasar grosir makanan laut, Huanan, di wuhan, hubei, cina. organisasi Kesehatan Dunia menyatakan sebagai pandemi COVID-19 Pada 11 Maret 2020 (WHO,2020). Untuk mencegah penyebaran COVID-19 lebih lanjut, banyak negara telah menerapkan sejumlah protokol pencegahan, salah satunya social distancing dan kampanye stay at home. Hal tersebut berdampak terhadap sejumlah aspek tidak hanya terhadap bidang ekonomi, tetapi juga terhadap bidang pendidikan. Tujuan: Untuk Mengetahui hubungan pembelajaran jarak jauh terhadap motivasi belajar mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi saat masa pandemi COVID-19 di Indonesia. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian Analitik untuk mengetahui tentang hubungan pembelajaran jarak jauh terhadap motivasi belajar mahasiswa FKG saat pandemi COVID-19 di Indonesia dengan desain studi potong lintang (cross-sectional) untuk menjawab rumusan masalah serta mencapai tujuan dari penelitian. Kuesioner terdiri dari 48 pertanyaan. Digunakan uji korelasi melalui uji kendall’s taudengan melihat nilai p-value dan r (Koefisien korelasi) untuk analisis statistik. Hasil: Berdasarkan uji kendall's tau terdapat hubungan yang signifikan (p<0,05) antara pembelajaran jarak jauh dengan akademik motivasi dan sosiodemografi. Kesimpulan: Semakin baik tingkat pembelajaran jarak jauh maka semakin tinggi tingkat motivasi mahasiswa FKG selama masa pandemi COVID-19 di Indonesia.

Background: At the end of December 2019, an outbreak of pneumonia characterized by fever, dry cough and fatigue as well as gastrointestinal symptoms occurred at the seafood wholesale market, Huanan, in wuhan, hubei, China. The World Health Organization declared a pandemic COVID-19 On March 11, 2020 (WHO,2020). To prevent the further spread of COVID-19, many countries have implemented a number of prevention protocols, one of which is social distancing and stay-at-home campaigns. This has an impact on a number of aspects not only in the economic field, but also in the education sector. Objective: To determine the relationship between distance learning and the learning motivation of Faculty of Dentistry students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Methods: This study used a analytic research design to determine the relationship between distance learning and learning motivation of FKG students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia with a cross-sectional study design to answer the problem formulation and achieve the objectives of the study. The questionnaire consists of 48 questions. kendall’s tau correlation test was used by looking at the p-value and r (correlation coefficient) for statistical analysis. Results: Based on the Spartan test, there was a significant relationship (p<0.05) between distance learning and academic motivation and sociodemography. Conclusion: The better the level of distance learning, the higher the motivation level of FKG students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia."

"It is widely accepted that education is one important sector in human life espicially related to access and participation. However , Indonesia sill faces problem in relation to equal education access for boys is higher than rhose for girls. This situation shows, to some point, hind rents the Indonesia government to provide equal education for man and woman as one target of the United Nation's Millenium Declaration. It is the necessary to take a look at policies of Indonesia government on education and how the policies influence women participation in education. One of the government policies which could benefit women is the acknowledgeement of distance education (DE) in Indonesia educational system. This paper discusses how DE could benefit women by providing wider access to education. For illustration , this paper provides analysis of roles and performances of Universitas Terbuka , a state national higher education which fully implements DE system, in relation to efforts to increase access and participation of women in education, espicially in higher education."

"Student's academic survival is the ability of a student to remain active in his study. There were many researchers who have conducted researches concerning student's academic survival but the data used were not considered as a consored data. Data of student's academic survival at Universitas Terbuka (UT) as a Higher Distance Education can be category censored data. The censorship type used in this research was right censor type 1 (time sensor). This research objectives were to (a) identity the factors which influence the student's academic survival at UT, (b) determine the interaction and characteristics which significantly influence the student's academic survival by using cox regression, (c) determine probability combination of the characteristics of student's academic survival at UT based on the significant variables. The result of this research showed that most students of FEKON - UT (86,40%) could not finish their study program . The factors in fluencing the student's academic survival were age, number of courses being taken, participation in tutorial activities, grade point average (GPA) of the first semester, and their cumulative GPA."
