"Jurnal ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tindak tutur dialog yang digunakan oleh tokoh-tokoh dalam film The Farewell. Penulisan jurnal ini ditunjukan untuk mengeksplorasi aspek pragmatis tindak tutur dalam kerangka teori tindak mengancam muka yang dikemukakan oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987) dan unutk menganalisis konsep muka terutama muka positif dan muka negatif dari teori tersebut. Jurnal ini juga digunakan untuk melihat penggunaan konsep muka Cina di dalam film. Muka merupakan konsep yang sudah tidak asing lagi bagi masyarakat Cina, yang sering digunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Muka dapat secara efektif menggambarkan cara orang Cina dalam menghadapi hubungan interpersonal. Dalam film The Farwell, para tokoh memperlihatkan tindakan saling mengancam muka yang merusak muka negatif dan positif mereka untuk menyelamatkan muka mereka dari ketidaksetujuan satu sama lain. Dialog dalam film juga dianalisis dari segi frekuensi melakukan tindakan yang mengancam muka positif dan negatif, serta konsep muka Cina lian dan khususnya mianzi sebagai pengaruh dalam melakukan tindak menyerang muka. Penemuan juga diinterpretasikan dalam konteks yang dibingkai oleh faktor-faktor seperti perbedaan pemikiran atau perilaku antara orang Cina yang pernah tinggal di Barat dengan Timur.

This journal shows the analysis of speech act used in the dialogues by the characters in the film "The Farewell." The aims is to explore the pragmatic aspects of speech act in the framework of Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Face Threatening Acts theory (FTAs) and to analyse concept of face focused on positive and negative faces from the said theory and to find the use of Chinese concept of face inside the movie. Face is a familiar concept for Chinese people, which is frequently used in daily life. It can effectively describe the process of Chinese people in dealing with interpersonal relationships. In the movie "The Farwell," the characters shows face threatening acts to each others’ faces that damaged their negative and positive faces to save their face from each others' disagreements. The dialogues in the movie was analysed in terms of the frequency of positive and negative face-threatening acts, as well as the use of Chinese face concepts lian and especially mianzi as the influence of doing FTAs. The findings are also interpreted within the context framed by factors such as the difference of thinking or behaviour between Chinese people who has lived in the West with people who has lived in the East."
