""There are no two neighbouring countries any where in the world that are more different than Indonesia and Australia. They differ hugely in religion, language, culture, history, geography, race, economics, worldview and population (Indonesia, 270 million, Australia less than 10 per cent of that). In fact, Indonesia and Australia have almost nothing in common other than the accident of geographic proximity. This makes their relationship turbulent, volatile and often unpredictable. Strangers Next Door? brings together insiders and leading observers to critically assess the state of Australia-Indonesia relations and their future prospects, offering insights into why the relationship is so important for Australia, why it is so often in crisis, and what this means for the future. This book will be of interest to anyone concerned with the Indo-Pacific region, Southeast Asia, Australia and Indonesia, and each country's politics, economy and foreign policy. It contains chapters that will interest specialists but are written in a style accessible to a general audience. The book spans a diverse range of subjects, including political relations and diplomacy, security and defence, the economy and trade, Islam, education, development, the arts, legal cooperation, the media, women, and community ties. Contributors assess the current state of relations in their sphere of expertise, and outline the factors and policies that could shape bilateral ties - and Indonesia's future - over the coming decades. University of Melbourne scholars Tim Lindsey and Dave McRae, both prominent observers and commentators on Indonesia and its relations with Australia, edited the volume, providing a synthesising overview as well as their own thematic chapters."--Provided by publisher."

ABSTRACT
One of the five fundamental aspects of a livable city that affects the quality of life is a vibrant public space (Livable City, n.d.) because public space plays an important role in accommodating interactions between strangers (Lofland, 1973). A public space can be said to be a successful or sociable public space, one of which is indicated by the existence of interactions (Rad & Ngah 2013), and these meaningful interaction between strangers are very influential on community building and social cohesion. Fourth places are one example of a public space that has the potential to induce interactions between strangers (Aelbrecht, 2016). To achieve meaningful interaction between strangers, we need to consider the spatial elements and physical features in designing the space. One of the physical features of a sociable public space is the physical opportunity to sit, pause and think for the people who are in it (Rad & Ngah 2013). This thesis intends to see the role of the public spaces physical features on the interaction between strangers in the context of a fourth place. The conducted observation indicate that the interaction between strangers is not solely due to the physical opportunity to sit, pause and think, however, what also needs to be considered from the physical features is the configuration of space and how it affects the behavior of each subject and social relations that might appear."

"From Empire to Humanity: The American Revolution and the Origins of Humanitarianism tells the story of a generation of American and British activists who transformed humanitarianism as they adjusted to being foreigners in the wake of the American Revolution. In the decades before the Revolution, Americans and Britons shared an imperial approach to charitable activity. Growing up in the increasingly integrated British Atlantic world, future activists from the British Isles, North America, and the Caribbean developed expansive outlooks and connections. For budding doctors, this was especially true. American independence put an end their common imperial humanitarianism but not their transatlantic ties, their far-reaching visions, or their belief that philanthropy was a tool of statecraft and reconciliation. In the postwar years, with doctor-activists at the forefront, they collaborated in medical philanthropy, antislavery, prison reform, poor relief, educational charities, and more. The nature of their cooperation, however, had changed. No longer members of the same polity, the erstwhile compatriots adopted a universal approach to their beneficence as they reimagined bonds with people who were now legal strangers. The basis of renewed cooperation, universal benevolence could also be a source of tension. With the new wars at the end of the century, activists optimistic cosmopolitanism waned while their practices endured."
