ABSTRACTThis article will explain about how mental illness is being represented in Its Kind of a Funny Story, a young adult novel about depression. Through textual analysis, it is found that the novel treats depression as a serious medical illness and, by using Marcias identity statuses model, proposed an idea that depression may be caused by an undergoing adolescent identity formation. However, there are two limitations in this research: depression in non-white and/or underprivileged, as well as female characters, are not discussed. These limitations may serve as a research gap for future research."

Pada era 2010-an, popularitas dan pengaruh genre distopia di kalangan pembaca usia remaja diperkuat dengan digandrunginya beberapa novel seperti The Hunger Games, Divergent, dan Legend yang mampu menjangkau jutaan pembaca. Artikel ini akan secara spesifik menganalisis trilogi Legend (2011) karya Marie Lu, sebuah seri novel distopia yang berlatar di Amerika Serikat pasca sebuah kejadian apokaliptik. Dengan menggunakan konsep gender biner yang berlawanan dan konsep possibilites-potentialites, artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap bagaimana trilogi Legend (2011) mencoba merekonstruksi identitas gender dengan menggambarkan peran-peran gender yang progresif, terutama dalam penggambaran karakter utama dan karakter pendukung. Artikel ini akan mengidentifikasi representasi gender dalam trilogi Legend (2011), menganalisis apakah representasi tersebut konsisten di sepanjang cerita, serta mempelajari pesan-pesan tersirat tentang nilai-nilai gender di dunia nyata. Berdasarkan analisis yang telah dilakukan, trilogi Legend (2011) cenderung menggambarkan kembali realita yang sudah ada di dunia nyata. There is no doubt that young adult dystopian novels are popular among their audience. Young adult dystopian novels offer readers a fictional medium to reimagine societal values, including, but not limited to, gender. In the 2010s, titles such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Legend rose to fame as they amassed millions of readers, further strengthening the genre’s popularity and influence among young adults. This article will specifically analyze the Legend (2011) trilogy by Marie Lu, a series of dystopian novels set in the post-apocalyptic United States. Using concepts of gender binary opposition and possibilities-potentialities, this article aims to uncover the trilogy’s attempt at reconstructing gender identity by presenting non-traditional roles in its story, notably in its depiction of the main character and supporting characters. The article will identify gendered representations within the trilogy, analyze whether the representations are consistent throughout the story, and study its underlying message concerning values present in the real world. Based on the analysis, this article found that the Legend (2011) trilogy tend to reproduce existing realities that already exist in the real world. However, it still offers a layered, non-traditional representation of both masculine and feminine gender identity through its characters."
