"This book provides for the first time a complete review of both the geology and biology of all extant coral areas in the Gulf, the water body between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. In summer, this area is the hottest sea with abundant coral growth on earth and already today exhibits a temperature that is predicted to occur across the topical ocean in 2100. Thus, by studying the Gulf today, much can be learned about tomorrow’s world and the capability of coral reefs to adapt to climatic extremes. This volume provides the most authoritative and up-to-date review of the coral reefs in the Gulf. It can be used as a volume of general reference or as a textbook treating recent coral reefs."

Coral reefs are one of the most important marine resource potentials in Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of physical characteristics of waters on the distribution of coral reefs in the Waters of Karawang region in 2001, 2010 and 2017. The method used is field survey and image data processing using the Lyzenga algorithm to determine the distribution of coral reefs in the Waters of Karawang.
The results showed coral reefs in the Waters of Karawang spread in 3 Beaches, namely Ciparage Beach, Beach Village Pasirjaya and Beach Village Sukajaya. Coral reefs are scattered with clumping patterns. The type of coral reefs that exist in the research area is a cluster of charred rubbers patch reefs.
The pattern of coral reef growth in this study area has a pattern farther from the land, the changes in coral reefs will be more varied. Physical characteristics of the waters in this study are sea surface temperature, salinity and current in the waters of Karawang in this study is in accordance with the standards of water quality for coral reefs, so that coral reefs can grow and develop.
The influence of physical characteristics of this water affect the distribution of coral reefs in the long term which in this study is the year 2001 2017, because when the physical characteristics of the waters are not in accordance with the standard of quality, coral reefs do not die immediately but will experience various processes until finally die. As the sea surface temperature does not conform to the quality standard, coral reefs will die, while at high salinity beyond the standard quality threshold values, coral reefs can not grow and develop. At sea level currents, living coral reefs tend to have a unidirectional pattern with an average direction of ocean currents within a year.

"ABSTRACT
Bangka Island is well known as the world's largest tin producer. The inland and offshore tin mining has profound effects on the coastal environment, resulting in the high sedimentation in the water. Many corals suffered physiological damage due to low light intensity. The distribution of stony corals and the status of coral reefs was surveyed at 6 sites in West Bangka waters in October 2012. A total of 72 species of corals belonging to 33 genera and 12 families were found, and 4 species were distributed at all research sites. The live coral coverage was 36% on average and was categorized as being in fair condition. The coverage was 0% at Kamboja Island where the corals were the most affected by tin mining. The sediment flowed out from tin mining, blocked the light, and settled on the coral's surface. Consequently, many corals were buried and the live corals decreased. It is obviously necessary to reduce and control the tin mining.

Coral reefs are complex ecosystems with high biodiversity that supports the productivity of fisheries. Not much information on the research of bio-physical, socio-economic, and governance in the management of conservation areas in Pangandaran Ciamis. The research was carried out to analyze the condition of coral reefs in the aspects of bio-physical, socio-economic, and governance since the establishment of marine reserves as a conservation area and the factors that influence. Biophysical condition of coral reefs conducted by the line intercept transect (LIT) at the location of Pasir Putih, Batu Mandi, Batu Layar, and Batu Nunggal in 8 point depths (3 m and 5 m).
The environmental conditions of coral reefs conducted by measuring the water quality parameters (temperature, brightness, salinity, currents, and pH). To find out the socio-economic conditions of society and governance is done by using a questionnaire and interviews with 57 respondents. Secondary data coral reefs before and after the establishment of marine protected areas in Pangandaran collected from the results of previous studies.
Biophysical indicator shows trend results live coral cover in depth of 3 m have a tendency to decline, and a depth of 5 m has a tendency to live coral cover was stable. The condition of coral reefs in the study sites are in poor to good status. The condition of coral reefs in Pangandaran is influenced by the activity of tourism and fishing activities, as well as the active role in its management. Collaborative management of coral reef conservation in Pangandaran Ciamis is an important determinant of coral reef conservation.

"ABSTRACT
Providing accurate information on suitable multispectral satellite sensors for mapping coral reefs in Indonesia is a challenge for coastal remote-sensing experts. As coral reefs vary in spatial extent, shape, length, perimeter and/
or distance to shore, the mapping of coral reefs will need different satellite sensors depending on the objectives and the kind of information required. This work compares the suitability of two kinds of multispectral satellite sensors for mapping coral reefs in Indonesia, high and moderate spatial resolution. This was done through a case study of Wakatobi Marine National Park since that represents many types of coral reef in Indonesia (fringing, barrier, atoll, and patch). Indonesian coral reef shapefile data 2010 was downloaded from UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) website, and Landsat 7 ETM + images, path/row 112/064 was used to determine the terrestrial area of Wakatobi Islands. Both high and moderate spatial resolution sensors are suitable for mapping the benthic communities and geomorphic zones on coral reefs. The former are more accurate but they are also much less cost-effective, especially over large areas.

Indonesia is in the coral triangle with the largest coral population in the world. Indonesia has a coral reefs covering an area of 2,5 million hectares in which there are 362 species of hard coral with 66 species being economically important species. In the period between 2012-2016, Indonesia contributed an average of 5,58 % as the world’s second largest ornamental corals exporter after Japan. The utilization of coral for trade also sparked the issues of habitat destruction, illegal trade, and coral health problems has prompted the government to formulate regulations on the utilization of coral reefs for trade through a quota policy for taking coral from nature and the export banning of ornamental coral with the aim of improving the condition of coral reefs in Indonesia. This study aims to find an empirical evidence does the policies mentioned above affect the condition of coral reefs in Indonesia. The author uses the Fixed-Effect Model on the Difference in Difference regression equation whose result show that there were no real differences in the condition of coral reefs in Indonesia during the implementation of the quota policy for taking coral from nature and between before and after the export banning of ornamental coral. This shows that export banning of ornamental corals does not significantly affect the condition of coral reefs in Indonesia."

"During three months period observations (November 16 to January 13, 2001) in coral reefs of Pramuka Island
Indonesia, the nudibranch Phyllidia varicosa was observed while feeding on the sponge Axinyssa cf. aculeata. During
feeding, P. varicosa extended externally the pharyngeal bulb onto the sponge causing visible somatic damage. The
behaviors of contracting the body and retracting the rhinopores inside the rhinotube were also observed while feeding.
Observations on the feeding of Phyllidia varicosa on the sponge Axinyssa cf. aculeata and the presence of a visible
somatic damage on the prey due to predation are reported for the first time."
