"In this paper, I examine the stories about the origins of the first inhabitants ofthe Mentawai Islands. My aim is to understand the perspective of the localcommunity in seeing themselves in the particular place and space where theylive in the Mentawai Islands. In my opinion, a set of narrative as a story aboutthe origin of a group of people has a significant value for the development oflocal communities and their culture. A collection of narratives is an importantsource of information to understand the ideas of local communities in perceivingtheir past, especially people who do not have a written tradition. Many of thesestories have not been studied thoroughly and on this occasion, I explore it inmore depth."

"Dari adanya adaptasi budaya modern foto prewedding tentu akan memiliki kaitan dengan fenomena lain, terutama dari rangkaian acara pranikah yang sudah ada sebelumnya, seperti tradisi pingitan atau masa dipiare dalam adat kebudayaan masyarakat Betawi. Terdapat modifikasi pada masa piare demi melakukan foto prewedding yang dinilai memiliki nilai yang lebih substansial. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat dampak munculnya tren foto prewedding di kalangan generasi milenial dan keterkaitannya dengan praktik masa piare dalam kebudayaan orang Betawi. Penelitian ini juga menggali lebih dalam tentang bagaimana masa piare masa kini direproduksi menjadi aktivitas yang tetap ada namun tidak dijadikan aktivitas wajib yang perlu dilakukan, karena adanya produksi budaya baru yang modern dan dinilai lebih substansial, yakni tren budaya foto prewedding. Dalam penelitian ini, digunakan pendekatan teori subjectivity, practice, dan cultural value. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa praktik piare saat ini dinilai tidak lagi relevan dengan perkembangan zaman. Ini karena di masa sekarang calon pengantin milenial harus melakukan beragam aktivitas pranikah seperti technical meeting dengan para vendor, fitting gaun, testing food, bridal shower, dan yang utama yaitu foto prewedding. Hal-hal tersebut dinilai lebih substansial sehingga menjadi alasan para calon pengantin milenial Betawi melakukan negosiasi pada pelaksanaan praktik masa piare dari sebulan menjadi hanya beberapa hari saja.

From the adaptation of modern culture, prewedding photos are related to other phenomena, especially from a series of prewedding events, such as the tradition of the dipiare period among the Betawi people.There was a modification during the piare period due to the practice of prewedding photos which were considered to have substantial value. This study aims to examine the impact of the emergence of the prewedding photo trend among the millennial generation and its relation to the practice of piare in Betawi culture. This research also digs deeper into how the current piare period is reproduced into an activity that still exists but is not mandatory, due to the existence of a new, modern cultural production, known as the prewedding photo trend. In this research, the theory of subjectivity, practice, and cultural values is used. The results of the study show that the current practice of piare is considered no longer relevant to the times. This is because nowadays millennial brides-to-be have to carry out various prewedding activities such as technical meetings with vendors, dress fittings, food testing, bridal showers, and most importantly, prewedding photos. These things are considered to be more substantial, so they are the reason for Betawi millennial brides to negotiate the implementation of the piare period from a month to just a few days."

"Balian adalah istilah yang umum digunakan dalam budaya masyarakat Dayak untuk merujuk pada dua pengertian, yakni sebagai ritual adat yang biasanya ditujukan untuk mengusir penyakit atau sebagai bentuk syukur, dan balian sebagai pemangku ritual adat tersebut. Adalah novel Lampau karya Sandi Firly yang diterbitkan oleh GagasMedia pada 2013 yang menceritakan kisah tentang seorang anak Dayak Meratus dalam perjalanannya dalam mengejar mimpi. Novel tersebut mengangkat tradisi dan figur balian sebagai pemantik konflik para tokohnya yang kurang lebih menyoroti tentang terbatasnya pilihan hidup keturunan balian dan peran perempuan menjadi figur balian. Ditemukan rumusan masalah berupa gambaran representasi tokoh dan ritual balian yang terdapat di dalam novel ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi dengan pendekatan sosiologi sastra dan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Hasil dari penelitian ini ialah penggambaran tentang tokoh utama novel Lampau yang pada akhirnya memilih untuk mengikuti jalannya tradisi walau tidak sesuai dengan apa yang ia yakini selama ini.

Balian is a term that is frequently used in the culture of the Dayak people and has two meanings: it can refer to either the leader of a traditional rite or the ritual itself that is typically performed to banish disease and as a sign of gratitude. A novel titled Lampau by Sandi Firly, which was published by GagasMedia in 2013, tells the story about a Dayak Meratus youngster who attempts to pursue his dream. The depiction of balian as a ritual and a figure in this novel is used to raise the conflict, which circulated between the limitation of life a balian descendant should face and the role played by woman in the balian ritual. The representation of balian in the novel as a ritual and as a figure is the issue that is explored in this paper. This paper used qualitative research with a descriptive methodology combined with theory of representation in literary sociology approach. The paper’s concluded in the depiction of the main character who ultimately decides to follow the route of tradition even though it is not accordance to what he believes all this time."

"Artikel ini mempertanyakan sejauh mana masyarakat Belanda Progresif di bidang norma banhasa, kesusahan, dan gender. Dinilai dengan diskusi tentang norma bahasa di kamus Van dale dan resepsi terhadap kamus tersebut di Indonesia serta pandangan terhadap penulis wanita dan statusnya dalam masyarakat Belanda. Artikel ini berkesimpulan bahwa kebudayaan Belanda tidaklah seprogresif yang dibayangkan orang. Dalam hal gender, pandangan terhadap status dan kemampuan perempuan yang agak miring mungkin ini disebabkan oleh perempuan itu sendiri. "This paper looks at an early nineteenth-century Malay letter from a land of exile, Ceylon (present Sri Lanka). The letter, written in Colombo, was dated 3 January 1807 and is in Leiden University Library MS Cod.Or.2241-I 25 [Klt 21/no.526]. It was written by Siti Hapipa, the widow of the exiled Sultan Fakhruddin Abdul Khair al-Mansur Baginda Usman Batara Tangkana Gowa, the 26th king of the Gowa Sultanate of South Sulawesi who reigned from 1753 until 1767. He was banished by the Dutch (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC) to Ceylon in 1767 on a charge of conspiracy with the British to oppose the VOC trading monopoly in eastern Indonesia. Although many studies of Malay letters exist, letters from the lands of exile like such as the one discussed in this article have received less scholarly attention. Also remarkable is that this is one of the rare eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries Malay letters written by a female. Setting the scene with a historical sketch of the eighteenth and the early nineteenth century in colonial Ceylon and the Netherlands East Indies, this paper provides the transliteration of Siti Hapipa?s letter in Roman script, through which I then analyse the socio-economic and political aspects of the family of Sultan Fakhruddin in their exile in Colombo."

"This article is a literary analysis on Aleksandra Mikhailovna Kollontai? Vasilisa Maligina (1923) by using a feminist approach. Issues on masculinity are the focus of the analysis. The main argument of this article is that through the main character of this story - Vasilisa Maligina - Kollontai tried to expose the new image of Russian women by reconstructing the concept of Russian traditional masculinity in Russian society under former Uni Soviet communist government based on patriarchal culture."

"By deconstructing a text as proposed by Derrida, the text can reveals its meanings. To do this, re-reading a text is neded. For this purpose, the study attempts to understand the meanings behind Rendra's Surat Cinta and Surat kepada Bunda by discussing the use of metaphors. Both poems are read, re-read and discussed to get their meanings. It is argued that the re-readings show opposite meanings as understood in the first readings. Power, sex, and love are among the issues explored in the two poems. Furthermore, the metaphors reflect what sort of person the "I" is. "

"This article focuses on the psycholinguistic study of the syntactic aspects of Dutch-Indonesian interlanguage. The study is based on the interlanguage syntax observed in an oral test given to thirty Indonesian learners of Dutchas a second language, whose purpose is to test the processability theory of Pienemann (2005a, b, c, 2007). The results of the study provide evidence for the validity of Pienemann?s theory. Learners who have acquired sentences with the highest level of processing will also already have acquired sentences with a lower level of processing. The results from learners with a high level of Dutch proficiency verify the processability theory with more certainty than the results of learners with a lower proficiency. Learners tend to rely on meaning if they are not confident of their grammatical proficiency. Interlanguage is the result of the immediate need to encode in the mind concepts and ideas into the form of linguistic items, within a fraction of a millisecond, whilst the supporting means are limited, and whilst learners already have acquired a first language and possibly another language as well."

"This paper attempts to trace the identity construction of the Chinese from cultural anthropology perspective. It argues that the constructed identity is always changing and very much influenced by socio, economic, political and cultural aspects. By looking at the society, the language, the kinship and belief systems, it comes to a conclusion that the identity is not as simple as it looks. In fact, it often embodies a misperception of what it this to be Chinese. In this context, emphasies the needs for further development of chinese studies in Indonesian universities."
